Rogen is set to host this month's Independent Spirit Awards, for which 50/50 actually has three nominations including Best Picture. In an interview with multiple outlets about his impending hosting duties, one of Canada's favorite sons provided an update on Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse.
Last we heard back in September, the production was aiming for a February start to principal photography. While that doesn't look like it's happening, Rogen says that the film is still moving ahead, explaining, "It actually seems like it might happen. So that's really exciting for us. Studios don't green light movies anymore, they just kind of slowly let you realize that you're making it, but I think if they still did green light movies, we would probably be green lit right now."
The project originated as a fake trailer starring Rogen and Baruchel as roommates who continue to bicker even after a total societal collapse. The fictitious film advertised bore the title Jay and Seth vs. the Apocalypse, but more recently, the film has been referred to simply as The Apocalypse. That won't be sticking though, as Rogen said, "I actually just heard that Fox owns that title, so I don't know if we can use it anymore. So if end we up with a shitty title you can blame Fox."
Having been so creatively involved in so many of films, both Rogen and Goldberg are both eager to finally put their asses in directors' chairs, as Rogen said, "It is the first – we're the writers, producers, directors, and I'm one of the main actors in the movie – it's going to be the first time we're kind of almost completely, you know, in control of the product."
"I think, over the years, we've kind of become more creatively involved in the movies," he explained. "We've been executive producers on our movies for years, we've been producers now on a couple. And when I look at the movies we've written, I've really been thrilled that they've been directed by the people who directed them and I think they've added a lot to them and I think that it's going to be really interesting to try to execute our own script for once. And to see how that goes."
Though the film will obviously star Rogen and Baruchel, the cast will also include James Franco, Jonah Hill, Craig Robinson, and Danny McBride. With the exception of Hill, another Judd Apatow protege, all those actors appeared in Pineapple Express. When asked about a possible sequel that rare stoner action-comedy, Rogen laughed and replied, "The Apocalypse essentially has the same cast as Pineapple Express [laughs], so I mean, maybe we'll write it while we're filming."
Catch the Independent Spirit Awards, hosted by Rogen, on Saturday, February 25th, when the ceremony airs on IFC.
