Kyle Chandler Signs Up for Kathryn Bigelow's Osama bin Laden Movie

Clear eyes, full hearts, headshots.  Kyle Chandler, who played the virtuous Coach Taylor on NBC's Friday Night Lights for five seasons, is the latest addition to the cast of the Untitled Osama bin Laden assassination picture from director Kathryn Bigelow.  The film, formerly known as Kill Bin Laden, follows SEAL Team 6 in an early attempt to assassinate the terrorist shortly after the September 11th attacks of 2001 up through the eventual killing in Pakistan last May.

Chandler joins a cast that was already not too shabby.  There's Joel Edgerton of Warrior, The Chicago Code's Jason Clarke, Jessica Chastain from The Tree of Life and The Help, Edgar Ramirez of Carlos, and Chris Pratt, who holds it down comedically on Parks and Recreation and did some outstanding work in Moneyball

While most of those guys will be playing SEALs, Deadline reports that Chandler is set to portray a CIA agent involved in the international manhunt to find bin Laden.  Chandler most recently appeared in Super 8 for director J.J. Abrams, his first feature role after winning an Emmy for his excellent performance on Friday Night Lights.  He recently played supporting roles in The Kingdom and King Kong, as well as The Day the Earth Stood Still.

He also recently finished up a role in Argo, Ben Affleck's new film about a true story of a CIA infiltration to rescue Americans during the Iran Hostage Crisis started in 1979.  He's also starring alongside Russell Crowe and Mark Wahlberg in the crime thriller Broken City.

The film is Bigelow's first since becoming the first female director to win an Oscar for 2008's The Hurt Locker.  She's once again working with Mark Boal, who himself won an Oscar for his The Hurt Locker screenplay.  The duo were developing the untitled project even before bin Laden was successfully assassinated, and Boal subsequently modified the screenplay to incorporate the event.  The Pentagon announced an official investigation into the possibility that Bigelow and Boal illicitly obtained inside information on the top secret mission.

The untitled Osama bin Laden assassination film is set for release on December 19th, now with 100% more Kyle Chandler.
