Dirty and Sweet Together in a New 'American Reunion' Trailer

It's remembered more for exceptional naughtiness and kicking off a wave of sophomoric gross-out comedies, 1999's American Pie is also disarmingly sweet and good-natured.  Along with all the pie-thrusting and premature ejaculation, it has a fuzzy emotional center to balance it all out.  Both the grossness and the fuzziness are on display in the new trailer for American Reunion, the first theatrical sequel since American Wedding almost a decade ago.

This new American Reunion trailer gets the point across that the whole original cast is back, and the antics of Sean William Scott's Steve Stifler in particular provide the requisite raunch, but more than that, it tickles the nostalgia bone aggressively.  Just as American Pie is a quietly nostalgic look at the end of adolescence, this fourth film looks to capture the oddity having become actual grown-ups.

The trailer, which is approved for all audiences, premiered today at Yahoo! Movies, and you can head over that way to view it in high definition.

Hooray!  It looks like a return to form for an improbable franchise that felt overdone by American Wedding yet lurched on through no less than four straight-to-DVD sequels like American Pie Presents: The Naked Mile.  The ensemble cast sees the returns of Jason Biggs, Alyson Hannigan, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Chris Klein, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Jennifer Coolidge, Mena Suvari, Seann William Scott, Tara Reid, Chris Owen, Shannon Elizabeth, and, of course, John Cho as MILF Guy #2.

Jon Hurtwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the writers behind all three films in the Harold & Kumar series and the directors of Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay, take over as directors on American Reunion.  The duo also penned the screenplay, though Adam Herz, who wrote all three previous theatrical installments, is a part of the sequel as executive producer, along with original directors Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz.

American Reunion brings the nostalgia to theaters on April 6th.
