Turns out, Sylvester Stallone still has what it takes, as the actor-director's Expendables came out on top with approximately $35 million. The Expendables was heavily hyped as an old-school action extravaganza (in shocking 2D!!) starring a bevy of tough guys, new and old, and it didn't disappoint. Opening in 3,270 theaters, it averaged an impressive $10,713 per theater. It hasn't even opened overseas yet, where it should ultimately do even better than it does here. Now the sequel talk can commence...
Ryan Murphy's Eat Pray Love opened in second place with approximately $23 million, undeniably a bit of a let down considering how omnipresent the marketing for the film was leading up to its release. Eat was Julia's first headlining gig since 2008's Duplicity, and while it improved on that movie's take of $13 million, it opened on almost 500 more theaters. Either the ladies who wanted to see it couldn't convince their fellas to join them, or Julia's star power continues to dwindle...
The other big opener, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, didn't debut in spectacular fashion either, mustering up $10.5 million in its first three days. While beloved by fanboys and comic geeks, the film failed to connect with the general audience - not unsimilar to what happened to Kick-Ass earlier this year. Rest assured, Scott Pilgrim will find a second life on DVD/Blu-ray.
