It seems the Edgar Wright directed flick managed to steal the top spot from Christopher Nolan’s highly acclaimed feature, which spent the past month at number one.
In fact, Scott Pilgrim seemed to have everything going for it. The top spot here, amazing buzz from Comic Con and terrific reviews in addition to playing well for its audience. The PG-13-rated craziness, starring Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, opened to just $10.5 million at 2,818 North American theaters this weekend. For a film that cost around $60 million to make, that is a scary low number.
Certainly, one could describe the film as “genre-bending”, which usually doesn’t hold up well for general audiences. Yet Universal distribution president Nikki Rocco said she’s hopeful the film can still break out.
“All you guys in the press keep writing and talking about how we need more original movies,” she said. “Well, Edgar has done that.” That he has!
