Mara's name popped up back in July as one of the contenders for the coveted role, and at the time I had bemoaned the idea, strictly because I was very, very unimpressed with Mara's work in Nightmare on Elm Street. However, perhaps I should admit to myself that "Nancy" wasn't the role of a lifetime, and Mara simply didn't have enough to work with. Her work in The Social Network is supposedly excellent, and I'd trust Fincher with my first-born, so I'll just play this as "wait and see" right now. One thing is for sure: Those Social Network kids are going places - Mara's similarly fresh-faced co-star in the "Facebook movie" Andrew Garfield landed the role of Peter Parker a.k.a. Spider Man last month. Sony is building themselves a nice little family, aren't they?
Mara joins Daniel Craig, Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgard and maybe Max Von Sydow in the first adaptation, the latter name having just popped up in this Variety article as being in talks to play the key role of Henrik Vanger. It's said that Mara will adopt a Swedish accent in the film, which would be staying loyal to the story's origins. Filming on Dragon Tattoo begins in Sweden next month, with an eye toward a December 21, 2011 release.
So don't hold back - what do you think of Rooney Mara being cast as Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?
