Idris Elba

Idris Elba (Takers, "The Wire") will be the new Alex Cross, inheriting the James Patterson-created character from Morgan Freeman, who played the detective in the films Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider. The new project will be based on Patterson's twelfth novel featuring Cross, fittingly titled Cross.

The new Cross film will be helmed by vet of the suspense/thriller trade David Twohy, who directed last year's A Perfect Getaway, as well as 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick and 2000's Pitch Black. (He earned an Oscar nomination for co-writing The Fugitive, as well.) Kerry Williamson is penning the screenplay.

In the book, Cross is up against his most challenging foe to date: his wife's killer, a vile serial rapist terrorizing Washington D.C. The villain role should be a juicy one, so I'm eager to learn who nabs the role.

Cross is being privately financed by a group headed up by Lloyd Levin (Watchmen) and production is expected to begin in early 2011.
