Based on the book "I Love You Phillip Morris: A True Story of Life, Love, and Prison Breaks" by Steve McVicker, the film tells the tale of Steven Russell (Carrey), a family man who turned to a life of crime, with fraud and embezzlement being his specialties. Russell broke out of prison four separate times in five years in an effort to be with Phillip Morris (McGregor), with whom he fell in love with while incarcerated.
To recount the rough road Morris has had on its way to release would be, well, time consuming. Let's just say that its saucy subject matter and explicit scenes of gay sex made finding a distributor rather rough. In 2009, Consolidated Pictures Group acquired the rights, but ultimately, after many date changes, stops and starts, the release never came to fruition... Now it seems as though it will, although for your safety, don't hold your breath.
"Audiences who know this is from the creators of 'Bad Santa' will be thrilled that it's as outrageous as they'd expect," said Liddell Entertainment's Mickey Liddell. "It's a true-life, daring crazy love story with fascinating lead performances by Carrey and McGregor."
I Love You, Phillip Morris, which has opened abroad and grossed over $17 million worldwide, has a December 3rd North American release date set.
