Quick 'The Last Stand' Trailer: Arnold's Motley Crew in Action

He showed up in The Expendables 2, but Arnold Schwarzenegger's first starring role since spending some time in the ultimate vanity role as California's Governor is The Last Stand, a new trailer for which is now available online.

It's a quick trailer, clocking in at just one minute.  As such, it plays like an abbreviated version of the first trailer, the one unveiled back in August.  It very briefly sets up the idea that there's a reprehensible drug kingpin blasting south towards the U.S.-Mexico border in a car can cruise at around 200 miles per-hour.

The only thing really standing in his way is, of course, Schwarzenegger as Ray Owens, a small town sheriff and former LAPD cop who just happens to be built like an Austrian mountain of muscle.  Actually, this trailer spends quite a bit of time establishing that it's not just Arnold defending his town, but a ragtag group of odd characters played by Thor's Jaimie Alexander, Johnny Knoxville of Jackass, Luis Guzman from many excellent movies including Boogie Nights, and Zach Gilford, who we all remember as Matt Saracen from Friday Night Lights.

This trailer is very much in keeping with everything else we've seen suggesting that the tone will recall Schwarzenegger's Eighties heyday.  That involves big action, one-liners, and a happily goofy sense of humor.

It's been almost a decade since Schwarzenegger last starred in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, and since The Last Stand looks so much like some vintage Schwarzenegger, it'll be interesting to see how audiences react.

Of greater interest than the star, however, is the director.  That would be Jee-woon Kim, the South Korean director of The Good, the Bad, and the Weird who is making his English language debut with The Last Stand.

The movie arrives in theaters on January 18, 2013.

Here's the official synopsis and poster:

After leaving his LAPD narcotics post following a bungled operation that left him wracked with remorse and regret, Sheriff Ray Owens (Schwarzenegger) moved out of Los Angeles and settled into a life fighting what little crime takes place in sleepy border town Sommerton Junction. But that peaceful existence is shattered when Gabriel Cortez (Eduardo Noriega), the most notorious, wanted drug kingpin in the western hemisphere, makes a deadly yet spectacular escape from an FBI prisoner convoy. With the help of a fierce band of lawless mercenaries led by the icy Burrell (Peter Stormare), Cortez begins racing towards the US-Mexico border at 250 mph in a specially-outfitted Corvette ZR1 with a hostage in tow. Cortez’ path: straight through Summerton Junction, where the whole of the U.S. law enforcement, including Agent John Bannister (Forest Whitaker) will have their final opportunity to intercept him before the violent fugitive slips across the border forever. At first reluctant to become involved, and then counted out because of the perceived ineptitude of his small town force, Owens ultimately rallies his team and takes the matter into his own hands, setting the stage for a classic showdown.
