Riddick will hit regular-sized screens and IMAX nationwide on September 6, 2013.
That date was, up until now, unoccupied. So for now, Riddick has the first Friday next September all to itself, though that's guaranteed to change.
The film is the second sequel to the down and dirty 2000 sci-fi horror adventure Pitch Black, in which Riddick was a dangerous variable in an ensemble marooned on a desolate planet. 2004's The Chronicles of Riddick put the character at the center of a PG-13 summer blockbuster, shoehorning him into a more conventionally heroic role to diminished creative returns. Both films were directed and co-written by David Twohy, who is back directing and writing on this one.
Riddick returns to the style of Pitch Black, as Richard winds up crashed on yet another barren planet inhabited principally by nasty creatures hungry for greasy man flesh. With no choice but to send out a distress signal, Riddick accidentally alerts a team of mercenaries to his location, and they arrive on the planet motivated by the bounty on Rich's slick head and, in some cases, a thirst for vengeance.
The supporting cast includes Katee Sackhoff, Jordi Molla, Bokeem Woodbine, Raoul Trujillo, Matt Nable, Nolan Ferard Funk, and Dave Bautista. Karl Urban will also reprise his Chronicles of Riddick role as Lord Vaako in a flashback establishing how the title character went from being an interstellar emperor to a rock-marooned loner.
To celebrate the release date, Diesel took to his extensively utilized Facebook to share his enthusiasm, along with a picture of he and Twohy sharing their love of cargo pants:
