'Machete Kills' Set For September of This Year

We knew that Danny Trejo would once again lay waste to a villain's nefarious plans in the sequel Machete Kills, but we didn't know when.  Open Road Films changed that today by announcing the release date for Robert Rodriguez's next film.

The sequel is set for September 13, 2013.

For anyone keeping track, that's a mere three weeks before Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, the sequel to 2005's Sin City co-directed by Rodriguez and Frank Miller.  That one is scheduled for October 4, 2013.  So two Rodriguez joints within a month of each other.  What a bargain.

Machete Kills is the second installment in a planned trilogy springing from the mock-trailer created for Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's double feature Grindhouse.  This time, Machete must foil a deranged arms dealer's plan for global domination with the help of yet another loaded, eclectic ensemble featuring Jessica Alba, Amber Heard, Demian Bichir, Michelle Rodriguez, Mel Gibson, Lady Gaga, Edward James Olmos, Vanessa Hudgens, Alexa Vega, Lady Gaga, William Sadler, Sofia Vergara, and Charlie Sheen as the President of the United States in a bit of stunt casting.

The third entry in the trilogy, Machete Kills Again, would find the ex-federale traveling to space.  If that sounds like something you'd be interested in, make sure to see Machete Kills on September 13th, ensuring yet another sequel.

Here's the official announcement:

Open Road Films will release MACHETE KILLS – directed by Robert Rodriguez (Machete, Sin City, Spy Kids franchise) and starring Danny Trejo, Michelle Rodriguez, Sofia Vergara, Amber Heard, Charlie Sheen, Lady Gaga, Antonio Banderas, Jessica Alba, Demián Bichir, Alexa Vega, Vanessa Hudgens, Cuba Gooding, Jr., William Sadler, Marko Zaror and Mel Gibson – on Septmber 13, 2013.

Directed by Robert Rodriguez from a screenplay by Kyle Ward and based on a story by Marcel Rodriguez and Robert Rodríguez, MACHETE KILLS is the sequel to the 2010 hit film MACHETE - which has built a devoted legion of fans since its release – and is the second film in a trilogy.  The film is produced by Robert Rodriguez, along with Aaron Kaufman and Iliana Nikolic through their QuickDraw Productions banner, as well as Sergei Bespalov of Aldamisa Films, Alexander Rodnyansky of AR Films, and Rick Schwartz of Overnight Films.

In MACHETE KILLS, Danny Trejo returns as ex-Federale agent MACHETE, who is recruited by the President of the United States for a mission which would be impossible for any mortal man – he must take down a madman revolutionary and an eccentric billionaire arms dealer who has hatched a plan to spread war and anarchy across the planet.
