Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson will take over for Brendan Fraser as the leading man in Journey To The Center of The Earth 2, which is evidently going under the title Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. Fraser dropped out of the sequel to the hit 2008 flick when Disney announced its plans to fast-track part two in order to release it next September. Another impasse was the absence of original director Eric Brevig, who is working on Yogi Bear for the studio. Cats and Dogs 2 helmer Brad Peyton will direct in his stead, and of course it will be released in 3D.

Johnson joins Josh Hutcherson, who will return from the first film, and in a more prominent role. The Rock will play the boyfriend of Hutcherson's mom, who Hutcherson is forced to bring on a trip to a mythical and monstrous island to find his missing grandfather.

Three other characters will be introduced in the movie and cast during the next few weeks; there's been no word on whether or not Anita Briem, who journied the last time around, will be involved with the sequel.

Disney is eyeing a late October start in North Carolina and Hawaii. The Rock is currently shooting Fast Five (the fifth Fast and the Furious movie), and his action-thriller Faster comes out in November... Guy likes it fast.
