As asteroid movies were to 1998, White House action movies are to 2013. This year, we've got two movies the concept of which is essentially "Die Hard in the White House" arriving within just about three months of each other. Olympus Has Fallen is the first, and the second is Roland Emmerich's White House Down, which stars Channing Tatum and Jamie Foxx.
Olympus is Fallen is positioning itself as the Deep Impact to White House Down's Armageddon by arriving first and casting Morgan Freeman in an important political role. Freeman's not playing the president, however. Here he's the Speaker of the House, while Aaron Eckhart plays the President, with Ashley Judd as the First Lady.
Basically, Butler is a former special ops soldier who can't get over an on-the-job accident. When a mastermind takes over the White House (codename: Olympus), Agent Mike banning has the chance to redeem himself, kill a whole lot of bad guys, and save the country in the process.
And here's the poster, which is pretty self explanatory:
With the aforementioned actors leading Olympus Has Fallen, the supporting cast includes a whole bunch of ringers like Rick Yune, Cole Hauser, Angela Bassett, Robert Forster, Melissa Leo, Radha Mitchell, Dylan McDermott, Han Soto, and Morgan Jaye Williams.
Antoine Fuqua directs from a screenplay by Creighton Rothenberger and Katrin Benedikt. As advertised, Fuqua is the director behind Training Day, and his other directorial credits include King Arthur, Brooklyn's Finest, Tears of the Sun, and Shooter. So he has plenty of experience directing action.
Olympus Has Fallen is set to bombard theaters on March 22nd.
