Vin Diesel and Karl Urban Meet Again in a New 'Riddick' Image

This week kicked off with a reminder that despite his reputation, Richard B. Riddick is, in fact, a sensitive soul who loves the rain

Now, the week ends with another image from this year's Riddick, but if the earlier picture showed the Vin Diesel character's softer side, then this one reminds audiences that Riddick is also a dangerous sociopath.

Riddick's made some characteristically bold sartorial choices here, foregoing his tinted googles and exposing his polished night vision eyeballs.  He's also sticking with his usual shaved head and tank top combination, all the better to showcase the muscles of his arms.

Space style aside, Diesel is joined in the image by Karl Urban, reprising his The Chronicles of Riddick role as the ambitious Necromonger Lord Vaako.  When last we saw Riddick, he was taking the throne of the vast Necromonger empire, but this new film returns to the Pitch Black formula of a stripped-down story on a desolate planet, where a marooned Riddick takes on bloodthirsty alien creatures, along with mercenaries whose motives are both personal and professional.  Urban's appearance in Riddick is expected to be little more than a cameo during a flashback explaining just how the title character went from being a galactic ruler to out on his ass on a random planet.

As usual, this latest Riddick image is here because Diesel shared it on his Facebook page.

Diesel and Urban are joined in this sequel by Katee Sackhoff, Jordi Molla, Bokeem Woodbine, Raoul Trujillo, Nolan Gerard Funk, Matt Nable, Keri Hilson, and Dave Bautista.

David Twohy, who directed both Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick, is back serving as writer-director on this film, which ditches the bloat of the first sequel and returns to the R-rated B-movie shenanigans of Pitch Black.

The film is set to debut on regular and IMAX screens on September 6th.

Here's the official synopsis and an international Riddick poster:

The infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.
