Yesterday, Michelle Rodriguez promised that today would bring a full trailer for the latest installment in the franchise that kicked off with the street-racing based The Fast and the Furious twelve years ago.
Rodriguez's promise now stands fulfilled, and after the actress sat out Fast Five, the most successful entry in the series thus far, she's back as Letty, the longtime love of Vin Diesel's Dominic Toretto. Her return is the hook in this trailer, the motivation for Dom to abandon his palatial villa and reassemble his crack heist crew, all of whom will receive full pardons for their fabulous crimes if they can help bring down an unstoppable bad guy who makes their past vehicular audacity look tame by comparison. For Dom, though, it's all about Letty, his presumed-dead lover who has inexplicably fallen in with the heavy, played by Luke Evans.
That's the narrative stuff. The real meat in this trailer is the action. For his fourth consecutive go-around with the series, director Justin Lin has redoubled his commitment to putting thrilling and ludicrously impractical automotive action onscreen. While Fast Five showed an obvious escalation in the level of action, Fast & Furious 6 looks to blow the figurative doors off, as one character accurately describes what's happening here as "vehicular warfare."
It's a long ways away from those simple days in which an undercover cop infiltrated an LA street racing crew on the suspicion that they were, in fact, highway robbers.
Paul Walker is back as Brian the cop-turned-criminal, along with his fellow original stars Diesel, Rodriguez, and Jordana Brewster. Franchise veterans Dwayne Johnson, Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Gal Gadot, and Elsa Pataky are also back. In addition to Evans as the primary villain, the already-sprawling ensemble also adds the considerable action chops of The Raid's Joe Taslim and Haywire's Gina Carano, who engages in fisticuffs with Rodriguez at a London tube station.
Fast & Furious 6 brings the vehicular warfare to theaters on May 24th.
