The list has been narrowed down to three prominent directors: Sam Mendes (American Beauty), Gary Ross (Seabiscuit) and David Slade (Twilight: Eclipse). Obviously the last name is the one that seems to make the most sense, as he's just proven he can handle a major series that comes with much fan scrutiny. But as I wrote last month, he's also in the running to direct Wolverine 2, and seems to be the favorite on that front. What's a man to do?
For the moment, there isn't a definitive answer, at least not that we know of. But apparently the decision in regards to the Hunger Games' cinematic future will be made in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
For those of you who are lost, here's the set up for The Hunger Games: In a not-too-distant future, the United States of America has collapsed, weakened by drought, fire, famine, and war, to be replaced by Panem, a country divided into the Capitol and 12 districts. Each year, two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal intimidation of the subjugated districts, the televised games are broadcasted throughout Panem as the 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors, literally, with all citizens required to watch.
Pretty dark stuff; although of course it's been done a hundred times before, from The Running Man to Death Race to Battle Royale. Still, if it's new to the kids, it's worth investing in...
