Natalie Portman

Natalie Portman has been offered the lead role in Gravity, Alfonso Cuaron's epic sci-fi film that seemed stalled last week when Angelina Jolie passed on it for the second time. Now it's Portman's turn to contemplate the ambitious film, which will co-star Robert Downey Jr.

Portman is building considerable awards buzz at the moment, thanks to her evidently powerful performance in Darren Aronofsky's brain-twister Black Swan, which came out of the Venice and Telluride film festivals carrying heaps of praise upon its back. Because Warner Bros. is only willing to commit to Gravity if an A-list female is in place, Portman's decision should seriously sway the film's future one way or the other. (Both Scarlett Johansson and Blake Lively were also in talks to star, but for unspecified reasons, nether worked out.)

Gravity, which is set to begin filming in January, tells the story of a woman stranded on a space station after satellite debris slams into it and wipes out the rest of the crew. Sort of like Castaway in space. Downey Jr. will only play a supporting role, so it would be up to the leading lady to anchor the tale. Interestingly, Portman at 29 is closer to the character in age than Jolie would have been. Perhaps this series of events have fortuitously led actress to project, and it will be a match made in the heavens...

Who would you rather see in the film: Natalie Portman or Angelina Jolie?
