James Cameron is planning a 3D documentary about the Brazilian Xikrin-Kayapo tribe this year, the director revealed in an interview with the Folha de Sao Paulo newspaper. Specifically, he plans to focus on the construction of a huge dam on the Xingu River, which could be potentially hazardous to thousands of the natives who live there.

Cameron already shot a short doc on the Xikrin-Kayapo tribe, which will be featured on the December re-release of Avatar on DVD/Blu-ray. "I want to return to meet with some of the leaders of the Kayapo-Xikrin Upper Xingu, who invited me," Cameron said. "I want to take a 3D camera, filming as they live the culture. Some of these things may never have been well recorded. Even more in 3D.

According to the AFP, President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva gave the green light last week for the construction of the Belo Monte hydroelectric plant on the Xingu River, a southern tributary to the Amazon. Work is set to begin on the project either late this year or early 2011.

In the meantime, Cameron is still working out his deal for Avatar 2 and 3, which he plans on making back to back.

Would you see be interested in this documentary? Does the 3D aspect of it help or hurt?
