What's been rumored for weeks has become official today: Robert Schwentke (Red) will direct Ryan Reynolds in R.I.P.D., the supernatural-buddy-cop-action-thriller that Universal is eager to get off the ground next year. Schwentke's name has been attached to the film since early August; the director is in-demand thanks to his highly-anticipated action-comedy Red, which stars Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman and Helen Mirren in a comic-book adaptation that has a similar tone to the one R.I.P.D. will shoot for.

The Dark Horse graphic novel is about two cops, one recently dead and a gunslinger who’s been dead for hundreds of years who work on the Rest in Peace department - which is the police department of the dead. Nick Cruz was murdered by an unknown assailant, at the height of his personal and professional life. Now he's traded a hundred years of service to the R.I.P.D. in exchange for a shot at finding who killed him. Unfortunately his search will take him to Hell and back -- literally!

The plan is to shoot R.I.P.D. late next summer, so hopefully you're not too amped for it just yet. Ryan Reynolds is a busy man at the moment, filming the comedy The Change Up with Jason Bateman, with Safe House (which I last told you about HERE) to follow. Who knows when The Green Lantern 2 will go into effect, but it's inevitable all the same...

Clash of the Titans scribes Phil Hay and Matt Manfredi are hashing out the R.I.P.D. screenplay.

Does this development make you any more excited for the film? Any less?
