Veteran Director John McTiernan was once upon a time, the go to guy when it came to cinematic adventure. With Die Hard, The Hunt for Red October and Predator, he set the bar for smart and well-crafted action flicks. Well it looks like he’s back! According to Variety, he has just signed on for the action-thriller Shrapnel for Paul Breuls' Belgium-based Corsan and FilmEngine in Los Angeles.

The storyline revolves around two war veterans who hunt each other down in a deadly game of cat and mouse from a script by Evan Daugherty.

"From the first time we read Evan's script, we believed we had the makings of a hit action film. With John McTiernan involved, the financing fell into place, and we expect to announce casting very soon," claimed FilmEngine CEO Anthony Rhulen who will produce the project, along with Corsan CEO Paul Breuls.

While it is good to see McTiernan back, there is still the question of the legal issue he involved in. He faces sentencing on Oct. 4 after he pled guilty in July to making false statement to law enforcement officials when he was questioned during an investigation of Anthony Pellicano, a Hollywood private detective. According to a spokeswoman for the director, the plea was conditional based on the result of his appeal.

Add to that the fact that his movies have not only been critical disappointments but also box office failures. Neither 2002’s Rollerball or 2003’s Basic ignited too much excitement for the filmmaker.

We’ll keep you posted, but hopefully this will be a return to form for a once great director.

What is your favorite John McTiernan film?
