Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige has repeatedly described The Winter Soldier as a "political thriller" and we know that it will be by far the most S.H.I.E.L.D.-intensive of the Phase 2 movies. So if our man out of time hero is now working for an espionage agency that tends to favor black leather, we couldn't expect that Cap would be wearing star-spangled underoos even on covert missions requiring stealth and subtlety.
So here we see that directorial duo Joe and Anthony Russo have outfitted Evans in an ensemble that is basically the Super Soldier costume worn by Steve Rogers in the comics for a stretch several years back. An image of that costume is included at the bottom of this post. Unlike the comic book version, the costume seen here incorporates Cap's helmet, as well as some design elements from his Avengers get-up.
This is pure speculation, but we're guessing that the costume seen in these images from JFX Online is but one of the Cap-specific outfits in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, one more appropriate for certain operations. With more public brawls where Cap's value as a symbol is more important, perhaps we'll still see Evans in a more traditionally patriotic costume.
Evans and Johansson are joined by fellow Marvel alumni Samuel L. Jackson, Sebastian Stan, Cobie Smulders, Hayley Atwell, Toby Jones, and Maximiliano Hernández. There are also plenty of new additions to the onscreen Marvel U, including Robert Redford, Anthony Mackie, Emily VanCamp, Frank Grillo, and Georges St. Pierre.
In addition to some shadowy goings-on in Washington DC, the sequel focuses on the return of Steve's old best buddy and sidekick Bucky Barnes, who is now the titular Winter Soldier, a brainwashed Soviet mercenary with a robotic arm and amnesia.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier arrives in theaters on April 4, 2014, a few months before Guardians of the Galaxy on August 1, 2014. Then, of course, The Avengers 2 brings back Steve Rogers on May 1, 2015.
