Human Scale 'Pacific Rim' Image: Charlie Hunnam as Raleigh Becket

Hey look, it's a new image from Pacific Rim, and this one contains neither a Jaeger nor a Kaiju.

Instead, it's almost like a trading card for the human lead, played by Charlie Hunnam.  The British actor is immediately familiar to any fans of the FX series Sons of Anarchy, on which he plays Jax Teller.  If you're anything like me, though, you'll always remember Hunnam as Lloyd on Judd Apatow's short-lived but great Undeclared.*  Of, if you really appreciate Alfonso Cuaron's Children of Men, he played the dreadlocked mad dog Fish out to avenge his bro.

And now we're looking at Hunnam's handsome mug because Pacific Rim could have all the most fearsome monsters and all the most spectacular robots, but they won't be worth a hill of beans if we don't care about the pilots inside the robots and the people they're fighting to save.

The hero of Guillermo del Toro's summer megamovie is Raleigh Becket, a Jaeger pilot who is part of the initial wave of victories against the Kaiju after they arise from that dimensional rift deep in the ocean.  When the tide turns, however, Becket burns out.  Years later, with the apocalypse at our doorstep, Becket must team up with a green co-pilot (Rinko Kikuchi) to operate a mothballed Jaeger and save the day.

Gipsy Danger is the American Jaeger that Becket pilots, presumably before things start going south.  Gipsy Danger is this one right here:

Hunnam and Kikuchi – so good without so much as a word of dialogue as Bang Bang in The Brothers Bloom – get some support from an eclectic supporting cast that includes Idris Elba of The Wire, Charlie Day of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Rules of Attraction's Clifton Collins Jr., Burn Gorman and Diego Klattenhoff of The Dark Knight Rises, and, of course, Ron Perlman of being Ron Perlman.

Pacific Rim thunders into theaters in 2D and 3D on July 12th.  But it was post-converted and never shot as a 3D movie, so stick with 2D.

*Every single time I've seen a Pacific Rim trailer with Hunnam's voiceover, I think of this episode where Lloyd takes his American accent out for a few laps:
