Coulson Lives: First Trailer for Marvel's 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.'

Pop quiz, hotshot.  What's better than seven seconds of first look footage from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., the upcoming ABC series that will take the phenomenally successful Marvel Studios universe to network televsion?

The answer is, of course, thirty-seconds of footage from Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

And that's exactly what we have for you today, by way of a TV spot.

Pretty much since its inception, it's been patently obvious that ABC would go ahead with a series directly related to the third-biggest movie of all time and a series of franchises the popularity of which shows no signs of abating.  But pilots – even seemingly sure things – don't always work out, so Marvel fans breathed a sigh of relief this weekend when word hit that ABC does indeed intend to take Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to series this fall.

The network is getting the hype machine up and running early, with a tease of the series set to air during tonight's season finale of Once Upon a Time.  After all, when you have a pilot directed and co-written by Joss Whedon, it doesn't hurt to get fans both hardcore and casual worked up into one big lather.  So here we are with a full TV spot and a teeny tiny tease of footage from that pilot, written by the Avengers director, Jed Whedon, and Maurissa Tancharoen.  The latter two will act as showrunners, since Whedon's busy getting The Avengers 2 ready for its May 1, 2015 release date.

We get a better sense of the actual specifics of the series from this thirty-second peek.  Agent Phil Coulson himself, back from the dead, explains very briefly that his team works the cases S.H.I.E.L.D. has yet to classify.  Watch away:

But how does Coulson live after (spoiler) taking a cosmic staff through the chest in The Avengers?  If you want to find out, a recent rumor might just lay it all out for you, and you can check that out by clicking right here.

With Gregg leading the charge, the ensemble cast also includes Chloe Bennet, Ming-Na Wen, Iain De Castecker, Elizabeth Henstridge, and Brett Dalton, all of whom play members of Coulson's S.H.I.E.L.D. team.

Here's the official synopsis and the first official look at the core cast:

Clark Gregg reprises his role of Agent Phil Coulson from Marvel’s feature films as he assembles a small, highly select group of Agents from the worldwide law-enforcement organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. Together they investigate the new, the strange, and the unknown across the globe, protecting the ordinary from the extraordinary. Coulson’s team consists of Agent Grant Ward (Brett Dalton), highly trained in combat and espionage, Agent Melinda May (Ming-Na Wen) expert pilot and martial artist, Agent Leo Fitz (Iain De Caestecker); brilliant engineer and Agent Jemma Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) genius bio-chemist. Joining them on their journey into mystery is new recruit and computer hacker Skye (Chloe Bennet). From Executive Producers Joss Whedon (“Marvel’s The Avengers,” ”Buffy the Vampire Slayer”); Jed Whedon & Maurissa Tancharoen, “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” pilot co-writers (“Dollhouse,” “Dr.Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog”); Jeffrey Bell (“Angel,” “Alias”); and Jeph Loeb (“Smallville”) comes Marvel’s first TV series.  “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” is produced by ABC Studios and Marvel Television.
