Stallone and Schwarzenegger shared the screen in both The Expendables movies, but both were basically cameos from the former bodybuilder and improbable California Governor, with a token bit of action added in The Expendables 2. But here in Escape Plan, formerly known as The Tomb, we're looking at a real two-hander between these two slabs of testosterone.
It's to Escape Plan's credit, though, that this first trailer doesn't simply scream "Holy balls everybody, Lincoln Hawk and John Matrix in the same movie!" Instead, our first look at footage from the action-thriller focuses on the concept. Stallone stars as Ray Breslin, a man who makes his living exposing security holes by breaking out of prisons all over the world. When he ends up in an experimental futuristic jail of his own design, though, Breslin is the victim of a set-up, abandoned among the prison population. To break out, Breslin teams up with a charismatic inmate who will help him find his mysterious enemy and regain his freedom.

Swedish director Mikael Hafstrom is best known Stateside for horror films like 1408 and The Rite. He looks to be acquitting himself to action well here, but what's more interesting is the prison itself, which has shades of horror and science fiction. The creepy masks on the guards, for example, represent a strange choice, and the sum of such choices could a movie that's more than an action hero team-up.
The movie's supporting cast represents a similarly unconventional approach. It's a weird assembly of actors, from Amy Ryan to Vincent D'Onofrio, Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, Jim Caviezel, Vinnie Jones, Sam Neill, and Faran Tahir.
Escape Plan breaks out on October 18th.
Here's the official synopsis and poster, followed by a standard Pumping Iron treat:
Escape Plan follows Ray Breslin (Stallone) who is the world’s foremost authority on structural security. He’s analyzed every high security prison and has gained a vast array of survival skills. But all Ray’s ingenuity and knowledge are about to be put to work in the most challenging test he’s ever faced: escaping from the master prison of his own design.
Schwarzenegger, in the role of Church, plays a complex inmate with multiple shades of grey. He’s the guy who fights to keep the prisoners from losing their humanity in their darkest hour as they struggle together to stay alive.
