New Trailer for Ron Howard's 'Rush' Is Turned On By Danger

The latest trailer for Ron Howard's new movie promises that Rush is, amongst other things, a vehicle for the unbridled charisma and sex appeal of Chris Hemsworth.

The first thirty or so seconds of the trailer involve no real Formula 1 racing content, but instead find a bloodied Hemsworth strolling into an emergency room and promptly macking on a nurse played by Natalie Dormer of Game of Thrones.  Just so you know what I'm talking about here.

Despite the centrality of the actor best known as Thor in this theatrical trailer, Rush is, in fact, a two-hander between Hemsworth and Daniel Brühl, best known for his tremendous performance in Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds.

Rush chronicles the true story of the relationship between racers the English Hunt and Austrian Lauda, particularly the 1976 season, in which the hard-living, passionate Hunt went up against straightlaced, technically-minded Lauda just weeks after the latter endured severe injuries in a horrific racetrack accident.  That the accident was at least partially Hunt's fault complicates things further as these two attempt to prove themselves the best in the world.

There's plenty of quick, high velocity Formula 1 racing action on display here, but the trailer is more concerned with the psychology of these famous men in a dangerous profession.  As Hemsworth's Hunt declares in dialogue with his wife, "Don't go to men who are willing to kill themselves driving around in circles looking for normality."

As you can see here, Olivia Wilde lends support, but the real love story of Rush looks to be between Hunt and Landa, two wildly different men who nonetheless share some crucial characteristics.

The screenplay is by the solid Peter Morgan, a British writer whose previous credits include The Queen, The Damned United, The Last King of Scotland.  This is his second collaboration with Howard, having worked with Imagine Entertainment on Frost/Nixon, a film about two strong personalities with a whole lot less racecar driving.

Rush, Howard's first movie since 2011's comedy The Dilemma, is set to hit theaters this September 27th.  That's not too long before Hemsworth brings the hammer down for the third time in Thor: The Dark World, arriving on November 8th.

Here's the official synopsis:

Set against the sexy and glamorous golden age of Formula 1 racing, RUSH portrays the exhilarating true story of two of the greatest rivals the world has ever witnessed—handsome English playboy James Hunt and his methodical, brilliant opponent, Niki Lauda.  Taking us into their personal lives on and off the track, RUSH follows the two drivers as they push themselves to the breaking point of physical and psychological endurance, where there is no shortcut to victory and no margin for error.
