'Elysium' Featurette Showcases Weta Workshop and the Hulk Suit

If, somehow, you didn't already hold the Weta Workshop in the highest regard, then a new look behind the scenes of Elysium ought to change that in two minutes flat.

"Weta built hundreds of props for the movie," Neil Blomkamp explains in the featurette.  "It's just a really great creative place that brings a very high level of creativity to doing concept art and brings very high level skill sets to actually manufacturing the concept art and knowing how to turn it into reality, which isn't always an easy thing to do."

Anyone who has combed through the Lord of the Rings Extended Editions and seen Richard Taylor catalog Weta's handiwork knows just how spot-on Blomkamp is here.  But those who haven't logged hours behind the scenes of that trilogy will be impressed by the Workshop's creation of the Hulk Suit, about which Matt Damon enthuses in this peak at Elysium.

The Hulk Suit is an exoskeleton grafted onto the body of Damon's character, Max, to augment his strength and keep him ticking in his quest to get from the wasted Earth to Elysium, the orbiting paradise for the super-rich that contains his salvation.

In this featurette from Yahoo! Movies, you get a sense of what the armor can do onscreen.  More impressively, you get to see the practical, twenty-five-pound version Damon comfortably wore on set thanks to Weta.

Weta Workshop also created props and vehicles in Blomkamp's outstanding directorial debut District 9.  That film allowed the director and workshop to produce futuristic tech that also felt used, practical, and weighty.  Elysium looks to be an even bigger opportunity to explore future tech that isn't simply eye candy to be marveled at.

Give this official synopsis of the film's story right here:

In the year 2159 two classes of people exist: the very wealthy who live on a pristine man-made space station called Elysium, and the rest, who live on an overpopulated, ruined Earth. Secretary Rhodes (Jodie Foster), a hard line government official, will stop at nothing to enforce anti-immigration laws and preserve the luxurious lifestyle of the citizens of Elysium. That doesn’t stop the people of Earth from trying to get in, by any means they can. When unlucky Max (Matt Damon) is backed into a corner, he agrees to take on a daunting mission that if successful will not only save his life, but could bring equality to these polarized worlds.

Elysium hits theaters on August 9th.

In the meantime, take a look at this Halo short film directed by Blomkamp and featuring props and vehicles by the Weta Workshop:
