Just yesterday, we got our first look at Christian Bale, Amy Adams, and Bradley Cooper in the first two official stills from American Hustle, and now this trailer allows glimpses at Jennifer Lawrence and Jeremy Renner, too, along with Michael Pena. Not included, as far as we could see, are Robert De Niro, Louis C.K. and Alessandro Nivola.
Russell is doubtless hoping to continue the prestige season hot streak he's been on with The Fighter and Silver Linings Playbook. This new film is a fictionalized version of the ABSCAM investigation, an FBI operation in Long Island that started out with stolen goods and ended up unearthing unprecedented political corruption at a state and local level.
Speaking on Good Morning America, where the trailer debuted this morning, Russel said audiences, "can expect a wild world of amazing characters. People, with their passions and their hearts, that was inspired by this wild event that happened back then. You've got con artists. Christian Bale playing a con artist from the Bronx, Amy Adams his partner in crime. So good, they get so good at what they do as con artists that the government asks them to work for them."
Looks like a blast, with a proven writer-director and a truly phenomenal cast letting loose on some outsized characters.
American Hustle opens in limited release on December 13th, then expands wide on December 25th.
Here's the official synopsis to give an idea of what all these Oscar-caliber actors are up to in the film:
A fictional film set in the alluring world of one of the most stunning scandals to rock our nation, American Hustle tells the story of brilliant con man Irving Rosenfeld (Christian Bale), who along with his equally cunning and seductive British partner Sydney Prosser (Amy Adams) is forced to work for a wild FBI agent Richie DiMaso (Bradley Cooper). DiMaso pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and mafia that’s as dangerous as it is enchanting. Jeremy Renner is Carmine Polito, the passionate, volatile, New Jersey political operator caught between the con-artists and Feds. Irving’s unpredictable wife Rosalyn (Jennifer Lawrence) could be the one to pull the thread that brings the entire world crashing down. Like David O. Russell’s previous films, American Hustle defies genre, hinging on raw emotion, and life and death stakes.
