The Future is Now: 'Elysium' Mega-Trailer and Two More Clips

If, somehow, you're still not psyched for Elysium, Sony Pictures has offered up several goodies to get you on board Neill Blomkamp's latest, showing off a new extended trailer and two clips that build the world of Elysium.

The sophomore feature from the director and co-writer of District 9 is set to hit theaters in just over a week, arriving nationwide on August 9th.

In the latest print issue of Entertainment Weekly, Blomkamp talks about the contemporary relevance of the film, which takes place in a future where the super-wealthy inhabit the titular space-station, an orbital paradise very, very different from the polluted, pestilential, overcrowded surface of the planet, where the vast majority of humanity lives in poverty.

"Everybody wants to ask me lately about my predictions for the future," the director says, "No, no, no.  This isn't science fiction.  This is today.  This is now."

Despite the film's social commentary, Elysium is also a bona fide blockbuster, as Blomkamp explains, "I'm a male that likes films, so I want to sit in a movie theater and watch something that's a ride.  I want that adrenaline part of filmmaking, but I also want it to be about something more than just things blowing up."

The first of the two newest clips, both courtesy of IGN, feels chopped into near incomprehensibility, but it does establish that Elysium is pretty much impossible to get in to for anyone who isn't a kajillionaire.  The second, meanwhile, finds Matt Damon's Max waking up after having his ailing body technologically augmented to aid in his quest to save his own life by breaking in to the space station.

Elysium also stars Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, William Fichtner, Wagner Moura, Diego Luna, Alice Braga, and Talisa Soto.
