'Thor: The Dark World' Reshoots Upping the Loki Factor

Everybody loves Tom Hiddleston as Loki.  In both Thor and The Avengers, Loki hit just the right villainous note, going arch enough to be a proper villain, but also showing just enough vulnerability that he doesn't become a mustache-twirler.

Everybody loves Loki, so Thor: The Dark World ought to please everybody, since Marvel Studios is juicing the sequel with even more of the God of Mischief.  Not only that, but it turns out jumbo-sized Loki will be on international IMAX screens early, as Thor's next adventure will arrive in 3D IMAX a week before the domestic release.

The latest Thor: The Dark World theatrical trailer, released just last week, really played up that Chris Hemsworth's Thor will be forced to worked together with Hiddleston as his adopted brother and problem child Loki.  The trailer almost made it look like the sequel is a two-hander between the Asgardian twosome.

That's unlikely to be the case, but it will feature even more of Hiddleston than originally planned.  Not surprising, since the fan-favorite is rapidly becoming the Mickey Mouse of Marvel Studios.  At last weekend's D23 Expo in Anaheim, Collider caught up with director Alan Taylor, best known for his substantial contributions to HBO's Game of Thrones.

"We're doing full scenes, scenes that were not in the movie before," said Taylor. "We're adding scenes, creating scenes, writing scenes for the first time....We realized how well Loki was working in the movie, and we wanted to do more with him. So it was that kind of thing, it was like, 'Oh, we could do this, we could jam this in here because he's such a wonderful guy to watch do his stuff.'"

Before you get alarmed, keep in mind that additional photography on a movie of this size is in no way unusual, especially for a Marvel movie.  Extra material is pretty much always added late in the game on Marvel Studios productions; keep in mind that the post-credits scene on The Avengers was shot after the movie's premiere.

Taylor explained as much, saying, "Kevin Feige's always trying to make the film better, see if he can push it up. I saw them do this on Iron Man 3, I saw them do it on Avengers. They have to kind of pry it out of Marvel's hands and put it up on screens because he never wants to stop improving things, so that's the phase we're in right now."

Thor: The Dark World arrives in conventional theaters on November 8th, but IMAX and Marvel announced today that the second movie of Phase 2 is to be digitally remastered for IMAX 3D.  It will be released in the format a week early, hitting IMAX screens internationally on October 30th.

So if you're not here in the States and eager to lap up some more Loki, you'll have the chance to do so several days earlier than you thought.
