New Footage in a 'Thor: The Dark World' Behind the Scenes Featurette

A new look behind the scenes of Thor: The Dark World offers up plenty of new footage from the sequel and promises that the next Marvel Studios release ups the ante considerably, expanding on the scope and emotion of its predecessor.

After all, we're now in Phase 2.  After assembling Earth's Mightiest Heroes in The Avengers, Marvel has to ensure that each solo adventure sets a new standard within its franchise and stack up favorably against the superhero movie to end all superhero movies.

2011's Thor did an admirable job of establishing the trickiest member of the superteam and the eternal cosmic realm he inhabits, but that film felt relatively small and comedic.  Incoming director Alan Taylor, best known for his work on HBO's Game of Thrones, appears to have blown the doors off the thing, increasing the action while also adding texture, depth, and a sense of lived-in reality to Asgard and the Nine Realms.

"What's so exciting is that all of the characters within that landscape are infused with a humanity and a humanity that seems to reflect our own," says Tom Hiddleston in the new look at Thor: The Dark World.  "And then alongside it you have fantastic explosions, action, setpieces that are intrinsically cinematic.  They thrill you and they excite you."

This little glimpse at the sequel is actually a special feature from the Iron Man 3 Blu-ray due on September 24th.  It first appeared online at the Tumblr Thor-Cat, and has subsequently popped up all over the place.

Hiddleston's Loki has become a big favorite among fans.  As such, we'll be getting even more of the character when the next Thor rolls around.  Just last week, Taylor revealed that reshoots are expanding the God of Mishief's role in Thor: The Dark World, saying, "We realized how well Loki was working in the movie, and we wanted to do more with him. So it was that kind of thing, it was like, 'Oh, we could do this, we could jam this in here because he's such a wonderful guy to watch do his stuff.'"

The villainous Asgardian remains, however, a supporting player.  Once again, this is Chris Hemsworth's show, and he'll doubtless deliver in his third turn as the God of Thunder, who is fighting a war, dealing with the Dark Elves, and bringing his Midgardian lover Jane Foster to Asgard.  Speaking of Foster, Natalie Portman returns in the role, along with Anthony Hopkins, Idris Elba, Jaimie Alexander, Kat Dennings, Rene Russo, Stellan Skarsgard, Tadanobu Asano, and Ray Stevenson.

Christopher Eccleston enters the series as the villainous Malekith the Accursed, joined by fellow newbies Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Zachary Levi.

Thor: The Dark World hits on November 8th, making it the first Marvel Studios movie to be released outside of the summer months.
