Barry's a foodimal, an ambulatory piece of food that's the result of the FLDSMDFR invention still churning on the island of Swallow Falls. Flint Lockwood and all his fellow Swallow Falls citizens have moved on the San Franjose, where the scientist now works for his idol. In their absence, the FLDSMDFR has transformed their home into a primordial jungle wilderness populated by foodimals like fruit cockatiels, cucumbirds, bananostriches, flamangoes, wildabeets, watermelophants, and tacodiles. In order to keep the foodimals from invading the mainland, Flint and his friends must journey back to deactivate the machine.
Some of the foodimals are dangerous beasts, but plenty of them are cute as buttons. The pickles that befriend Flint's dad, for example, are endearingly simple little creatures. Barry, the strawberry in this clip from Yahoo! Movies, is so cute that our heroes are able to suppress what must be a powerful urge to take a bite out of him.
This sequel will have the same energy displayed by the 2009 animated comedy inspired by Judi and Ron Barrett's children's book, despite the departure of original directorial duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller, busy on both The Lego Movie and 22 Jump Street. New helmers Cody Cameron and Kris Pearn were instrumental in the making of Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, and have given the upcoming entry a dose of the same manic energy, with jokes and bits hitting at a caffeinated pace.
Barry the berry is an example of the sequel's love of punnery. In our recent interview with returning Flint Lockwood voice Bill Hader, the actor recalled, "I just did ADR (additional dialogue recording) for the movie a couple weeks ago. And they played me a thirty-second clip, and there were eight puns in it, and I was recording a ninth one. It’s like in thirty seconds they jammed in as many puns as possible. I do like one where I say, this is not really puns I guess, but where I go ‘This is bananas’ and then we see giant bananas, ‘We're toast’ and it’s toast, and then I say, ‘This is – I was going to say nuts but I’m afraid what’s going to happen.’"
Hader is joined by an aural ensemble that includes Anna Faris, Benjamin Bratt, Terry Crews, Neil Patrick Harris, Andy Samberg, Kristen Schaal, Will Forte, and James Caan.
And guess who voices our new friend Barry? None other than co-director Cody Cameron.
Hear Cameron and the rest of the voices in this animated tale on September 27th.
