'Captain America: The Winter Soldier' Poster Takes Cap to the Capital

Mr. Rogers (not this one) goes to Washington.

With Thor: The Dark World just a few weeks from hitting theaters, Marvel Studios is starting the hype-ball rolling on Captain America: The Winter Soldier, unveiling a new theatrical poster for the star-spangled Avenger's next solo adventure.

Actually, "solo" might be a bit of a stretch.  Of all the movies in Phase 2 of the Marvel Studios master plan, this one boasts the biggest S.H.I.E.L.D. presence, with the likes of Scarlett Johansson, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, and even Maximiliano Hernandez all reprising their espionage-y roles alongside Chris Evans as Steve Rogers.

The man out of time is now working as a S.H.I.E.L.D. asset, conducting black-ops style missions with Black Widow as his full-time partner.  As Steve continues adjusting to this new world, he and Natasha Romanoff stumble upon a sinister conspiracy afoot in Washington D.C. and maybe within S.H.I.E.L.D. itself.  not only that, but a prominent figure from Cap's WWII past re-emerges as an almost-unrecognizable enemy whose beef with our hero goes deep.

Evans is looking appropriately heroic on this poster, revealed by Marvel on Twitter.  The poster is fine all on its own, but it also serves as an announcement that the Captain America: The Winter Soldier teaser trailer arrives online this Thursday.

Joe and Anthony Russo, a duo who have done tremendous work on NBC's Community, take over as directors on this sequel, which ought to be a very different flavor than Captain America: The First Avenger.  The first movie, directed by Joe Johnston, as a pretty straightforward two-fisted WWII adventure, but The Winter Soldier has been described as Marvel's version of a 1970s-style conspiracy thriller.

In addition to Evans and the aforementioned Avengers players, this next installment in Cap's story also boasts return performances by The First Avenger alums Sebastian Stan, Hayley Atwell, Dominic Cooper, and Toby Jones, playing Bucky Barnes, Peggy Carter, Howard Stark, and Arnim Zola again.

And there are plenty of new additions to the shared Marvel Studios cinematic universe, with Anthony Mackie as The Falcon, Robert Redford as S.H.I.E.L.D. brass Alexander Pierce, Emily VanCamp as Agent 13, and Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow aka Crossbones.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier hits theaters on April 4, 2014.  Check back this Thursday for the first trailer.
