'50 Shades of Grey:' Jamie Dornan Steps Into the Red Room of Pain as Christian Grey

The nation lets out a weary sigh of relief tonight, as the uncertainty surrounding Fifty Shades of Grey comes to a conclusion.

Jamie Dornan has stepped in to replace Charlie Hunnam as young billionaire and BDSM aficionado Christan Grey.  Rest easy, America, because this Dornan fellow is a handsome actor.

For months, the population of this great experiment in representative democracy was in the thrall of casting speculation fever regarding the leads in Fifty Shades of Grey.  Then, in early September, Universal Pictures and Focus Features announced that Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson as Grey and Anastasia Steele, the virginal college graduate who ends up embroiled in a passionate sexual relationship with the billionaire.

But then, earlier this month, Pacific Rim and Sons of Anarchy star Hunnam unexpectedly vacated the high profile role, concerned as he was over scheduling issues and the increased exposure from the myriad fans of the bestselling novel trilogy by E.L. James.

With production set to begin at the end of this month in order to meet an August 1, 2014 release date, it was imperative for the filmmakers to find a new lead actor.

And it seems that Jamie Dornan is the man for the job.  According to Variety, the Northern Irish actor will step into Grey's shoes.  Dornan is probably best known for playing Sheriff Graham Humbert on the ABC series Once Upon a Time.  He also appeared in Sofia Coppola's Marie Antoinette and has modeled for the likes of Christian Dior, Calvin Klein, and Armani.

Nowhere Boy helmer Sam Taylor-Johnson is directing Fifty Shades of Grey from a screenplay by Saving Mr. Banks scribe Kelly MarcelThe Social Network duo Dana Brunetti and Michael De Luca are producing.

Universal and Focus are no doubt hoping that the phenomenal success of the novel, which started out as Twilight fan fiction written under the pseudonym Snowqueen Icedragon, will lead to profitable sequels Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed.  We don't yet know if that's in the card, but if Fifty Shades of Grey leads to a franchise, it will star Johnson and Dornan.
