Cap Kicks Ass in the 'Captain America: The Winter Solider' Teaser Trailer

The leader of Earth's Mightiest Heroes is returning for his first adventure since The Avengers.

Marvel Studios has unveiled the first teaser trailer for Captain America: The Winter Soldier.  While Cap can't call on any gods of thunder or iron men, he's far from on his own, thanks to Black Widow, Nick Fury, and more.  Still, sinister things are clearly afoot at S.H.I.E.L.D., and the man out of time will have to adjust quickly before a ghost from his past consumes him.

Phase 2 in Marvel's master plan continues with Thor: The Dark World in just a few weeks, so it's time to start getting antsy for the next outing following Chris Evans as Steve Rogers.  Between his last two movies, Cap has already leaped, punched, and parkoured his way through many an action setpiece, but as the trailer shows, The Winter Soldier isn't letting him off the hook in the derring do department.

"There's nobody better at that kind of stuff than Marvel if you're going to attempt to pull that off and go for it," Joe Russo, who co-directed with his brother Anthony Russo, tells USA Today. "We all tried to up the ante with what happens in this movie in terms of what's come before, and I think we've done that."

With an ever-expanding scope come new characters.  Joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with this installment are Anthony Mackie as The Falcon, Robert Redford as S.H.I.E.L.D. heavy Alexander Pierce, Emily VanCamp as Agent 13, and Frank Grillo as Brock Rumlow aka Crossbones.

You can see these new additions in the pretty spectacular teaser trailer below or in high definition at Apple.

This could be something special.  Cap's a straightforward hero in the best possible way, a guy who knows what's right and how to act on that.  Having him deal with a world that isn't so simple, where what's right is murky at best, is very promising.  Also, he does a whole lot of cool super soldier stuff that's hard to beat.

The relationship between Steve and Natasha Romanoff, once again played by Scarlett Johansson, looks like a delight, too.  She's such a capable character that we're dearly hoping this isn't step one on the path to making her a romantic interest.  Other Avengers cohorts appearing in the sequel include Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, and Maximiliano Hernandez.

Captain America: The First Avenger actors are also appearing, with Haylet Atwell, Toby Jones, and, most crucially, Sebastian Stan all returning to one extent or another.

The eponymous Winter Soldier is a familiar face, one created by Ed Brubaker and Steve Epting in the pages of Marvel Comics only a few years back.  Despite his relative newness, the Winter Soldier is an exceedingly popular character.

"He's an amazingly drawn character. He's so well conceived," Anthony Russo enthuses, saying of Brubaker's introductory story, "It's one of the best comic runs in the last 20 years, one of our favorite comic runs of all time, and we really want to do it justice. It was important to us to make sure he just jumped off the page to the screen."

Captain America: The Winter Soldier hurls its shield in theaters on April 4, 2014.  Earlier this week, the a new teaser poster showed Steve on the deck of a quinjet looking out over Washington D.C.  You can take a look at that by following this link.

And here are two new images, here thanks to the aforementioned national newspaper.
