This week we've already seen quite a bit from John Carter. On Sunday, there was the Super Bowl spot and an extended, minute-long version of that commercial, then Monday brought seven new images from the science fiction epic that Disney is very much hoping will kick off a franchise adapting the almost-century old Barsoom novels by Edgar Rice Burroughs. Now, we've got a whole new extended TV spot, and this one feels like, with a month until release, the marketing effort for John Carter may have found just the right note to play.
Three weeks ago, director M. Night Shyamalan shared some inspiration and concept art from his upcoming effort After Earth, and now the production is apparently underway in Costa Rica. We know that shooting is taking place in Costa Rica because both Shyamalan and leading man Will Smith took the time to share some images from the tropical location, showing us all the director, star, and second lead Jaden Smith.
If you haven't seen co-directors Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman's 2010 documentary Catfish, you're sorely missing out on a propulsive and fascinating examination of online relationships, digital deceit, and, ultimately, the narratives we create to make our lives livable. It's a movie that inevitably sparks conversations about the nature of truth, particularly in a technological age where social media allows us to craft online personas, creating fictitious versions of ourselves. Now, a new MTV series focusing on Online Double Lives is set to continue exploring the themes of Catfish, and the documentary series is currently casting.
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is just a bit more than a week from its 3D theatrical debut here in the states, and in anticipation of the Marvel character's second cinematic outing, a new official clip has landed online. Contrary to what you might expect from a Ghost Rider sequel directed by Neveldine/Taylor, the clip is a quiet dialogue scene of nuanced and observant character interaction focusing on one man haunted by his unforgivable past.
Like everyone else, I assumed that The Karate Kid series died an undignified death with 1994's The Next Karate Kid, in which Mr. Miyagi used Nerf to train a new pupil played by future Academy Award winner Hilary Swank. But then the remake happened in 2010, rather unexpectedly grossing $359 million worldwide. Of course, Sony Pictures almost immediately set to work on a sequel, but progress has been pretty quiet. Now, we've got news that the new Karate Kid 2 has a new screenwriter in the form of Marvel veteran Zak Penn.
Universal Pictures has just released the first official teaser trailer and poster for The Bourne Legacy, the franchise continuation bearing the Bourne name but replacing Matt Damon's titular ass-kicker with another government-trained badass, this time played by two-time Oscar nominee Jeremy Renner.
Comedian, celebrant, and "Classic American Gasbag" Patton Oswalt has hosted not one, but two awards ceremonies in the last week. First he made his presence felt at the Annie Awards celebrating the year in animation, and now he has also presided over the Visual Effects Awards put on by the Visual Effects Society, an industry organization of VFX professionals. Both ceremonies involving Oswalt saw Rango clean up pretty well, as the animation debut from Industrial Light and Magic won four VES Awards, including Outstanding Visual Effects in an Animated Feature Motion Picture.
We've already seen one official poster and a bunch of banners for Wrath of the Titans, all of which appeared online in conjunction with the first trailer about a month and a half ago. This is a sequel with something to prove, though, since the 2010 remake Clash of Titans made no small amount of money but wasn't dearly loved by too many folks. In addition to changing up the director and whatnot, Warner Bros is making the case for Wrath of the Titans today with two new posters, both of which encourage us all to "Feel the Wrath."
A year ago, it was looking like The Wolverine would be filming in the summer of 2011 under the direction of Darren Aronofsky, who was at the time basking in awards season accolades for Black Swan. That obviously didn't happen, and the sorta-sequel to X-Men Origins: Wolverine has suffered quite a few setbacks, but it would appear that 20th Century Fox has set up a new release date in the summer of 2013.
Way back in July of last year, Robert Rodriguez made mention of a couple sequels during his panel at the San Diego Comic-Con. The endlessly-discussed Sin City 2 came up, of course, but the man behind Troublemaker Studios also said that we'll soon be seeing a sequel to 2010's Machete, and it will be the second in a planned trilogy that culminates with Danny Trejo's one-man army venturing into space. Now, it looks like Machete Kills is coming together, with an April production start tentatively planned.
