This year's staid and congratulatory awards season is now a distant memory, but there's still one awards show left, one that self-consciously defies the pomp and circumstance of the Oscars and the like. The MTV Movie Awards don't take themselves too seriously, as demonstrated by categories such as "Best Fight," "Best Kiss," and "Best On-Screen Dirtbag." Nominations for the summer's awards have been announced, with The Hunger Games and Bridesmaids racking up eight apiece.
From here to the end of February, nary a day will go by that won't have that dark cloud of the Oscars hanging over it, threatening to rain awards season accolades all over your day when you didn't think to bring an umbrella. While a handful of critical organizations already went ahead and just started throwing honors around ally willy nilly, most of the awards news consists of nomination announcements. Yesterday, the Producers Guild of America officially declared their line-up of would-be award winners, and today, the Art Directors Guild announced the movies, television series, and commercials up for the 16th annual art direction honors.
Because one seemingly interminable night of bloviating and self-congratulatory pomp just isn't enough, the awards season must span the three months leading up to the Oscar Ceremony in late February. During those three months, many a critical organization drops their own list of honorees from cinema of the last year, and all of these awards contribute to the narrative of "buzz" for a film or performance film leading up to the Academy Awards. One such set of honors are the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and today, the nominees for the 18th annual awards were announced, with the winners set to revealed on Sunday, January 29, 2012.
Out of sixty-six films initially in contention to be nominees for the Foreign Language category at this year’s Academy Awards, nine have been chosen as finalists. From here, it will be narrowed down to just five nominated films. Those will be announced, along with the rest of the nominations, on January 25th.
The nominees for the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards were announced today in Los Angeles at the Pacific Design Center’s SilverScreen Theater in West Hollywood. The award show will air live on TBS and TNT Sunday January 30th.
Once again, David O. Russell’s The Fighter and Tom Hooper’s The King’s Speech earned multiple nominations. Check out the full list of nominations below!
