Rogue 10: Ten Diminutive Movie Monsters

Tuesday, 27 March 2012 13:28

In Camel Spiders, the unapologetic B-movie throwback presented by Roger Corman, a band of soldiers and townspeople in Arizona must fight off a seemingly unstoppable species of creature unknowingly brought to the U.S. from Iraq by returning servicemen.  The SyFy movie, directed by Jim Wynorski and starring C. Thomas Howell and Brian Krause, is available for purchase and rental on Blu-ray and DVD as of today.

Of course, the camel spiders featured in the film bare little resemblance the real-life critters, which have been the subject of endless rumors since the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003.  Really, Camel spiders aren't the size of bowling balls, can't run thirty miles per hour, aren't poisonous, and technically aren't even spiders (they're solifugae, which are, however, in the Arachnida class).

Still, the sensationalized, scary movie version of camel spiders inspired us at IAR to think about a certain type of scary movie monster.  Basically, the little guys.  Of course hulking killers like Jason are scary, but what about the characters and beasts who can do just as damage even though they're about two feet tall or even smaller?  With Camel Spiders in mind, we're presenting ten examples of diminutive but nonetheless horrifying cinematic creations.

Opening in theaters on January 13th is the new post-apocalyptic science-fiction thriller from French director Xavier Gens (Hitman) called The Divide. The film's cast features an excellent ensemble of veteran actors including Michael Biehn (The Terminator, Aliens), Milo Ventimiglia (TV's Heroes, Rocky Balboa), Peter Stormare (Fargo, Constantine), Rosanna Arquette (Silverado, Pulp Fiction), and Courtney B. Vance (Final Destination 5, The Hunt for Red October).

IAR's Managing Editor Jami Philbrick recently had a chance to sit down with actor Michael Biehn to talk about his work on The Divide. Biehn discussed the new film, working with director Xavier Gens, writing his own dialogue, creating his unique character, the uncomfortable on-set environment, and the actors actual hatred towards each other.

When you think of Bill Paxton, you probably think of him as the actor who, in his collaborations with James Cameron, played the panicking Private Hudson in Aliens, an unctuous used car salesman in True Lies, or the dude who learned some very important lessons about love in Titanic.  Of course, Paxton has an extensive resume of films that aren't blockbusters, and he also has two feature films under his belt as a director.  It looks like he's going to gt his biggest directorial job yet, as Deadline reports that Paxton is currently in talks with Legendary Pictures to helm Kung Fu, a big screen update of the 192-1975 television series.

One of the many, many things that separate Alien and Aliens from their genre counterparts – and indeed the rest of their franchise – are the memorable, fleshed out supporting characters.  Whereas most films with killer monsters are populated by bland meatbags waiting to get eviscerated, Ridley Scott's space truckers and James Cameron's colonial marines make a big impression.  In Aliens, longtime Cameron muse Bill Paxton plays Private Hudson, a blustering jag who falls gloriously to pieces when the feces hit the fan.  A new video compiles every single one of Paxton's over-the-top line readings as Hudson, so you can see his entire catchphrase-packed character arc, without the fuss of, you know, watching a good movie.
