The new comedic drama What to Expect When You're Expecting isn't based on the most likely source material.  Sure, the book of the same name by Heidi Murkoff has consistently topped bestseller lists since first being published in 1984.  In three subsequent editions since then, it has sold almost 15 million copies and become the go-to handbook for modern pregnancy.  That's what makes it an unlikely movie: it's a self-help text, a practical guide filled with information and tips on the different stages of pregnancy and early childhood.

The film version, Kirk Jones and co-written by Heather Hatch and Shauna Cross, incorporates Murkoff's applicable advice into a narrative feature by telling five interconnected stories of pregnancy, each with their own couples and circumstances.  That means What to Expect When You're Expecting stars a sprawling ensemble cast, including Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Banks, Rodrigo Santoro, Chris Rock, Brooklyn Decker, Matthew Morrison, Anna Kendrick, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ben Falcone, Chace Crawford, Rob Huebel, and Joe Manganiello.

IAR Managing Editor Jami Philbrick attended the press day for this Lionsgate release in Los Angeles, where Murkoff and Jones, along with much of the all-star ensemble cast, enthusiastically discussed the book, making the movie, drawing from real-life experience, and working with lovely, talented ladies.

What To Expect When You're Expecting

Tuesday, 24 April 2012 14:43

Synopsis: Inspired by the perennial New York Times bestseller of the same name, WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU'RE EXPECTING is a hilarious and heartfelt big screen comedy about five couples whose intertwined lives are turned upside down by the challenges of impending parenthood. Over the moon about starting a family, TV fitness guru Jules and dance show star Evan find that their high-octane celebrity lives don't stand a chance against the surprise demands of pregnancy. Baby-crazy author and advocate Wendy gets a taste of her own militant mommy advice when pregnancy hormones ravage her body; while Wendy's husband, Gary, struggles not to be outdone by his competitive alpha-Dad, who's expecting twins with his much younger trophy wife, Skyler. Photographer Holly is prepared to travel the globe to adopt a child, but her husband Alex isn't so sure, and tries to quiet his panic by attending a "dudes" support group, where new fathers get to tell it like it really is. And rival food truck chefs Rosie and Marco's surprise hook-up results in an unexpected quandary: what to do when your first child comes before your first date? A kaleidoscopic comedy as universal as it is unpredictable, WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOU'RE EXPECTING finds humor and uplift in all the unexpected trials and triumphs of welcoming a child into the world. The film stars Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Elizabeth Banks, Chace Crawford, Brooklyn Decker, Anna Kendrick, Matthew Morrison, Dennis Quaid, Chris Rock, Rodrigo Santoro, Ben Falcone and Joe Manganiello.

Five new character posters from What to Expect to Expect When You're Expecting pretty clearly convey that the movie is about pregnancy by showcasing the five lead actresses in varying stages of knocked-upedness.  Elizabeth Banks, Cameron Diaz, Anna Kendrick, Brooklyn Decker, and Jennifer Lopez are all present and accounted for, and each also gets a little quotation to give you some insight on their character and let you know that the movie is agreeably lighthearted.

Since dropping the first-ever digitally animated feature film with Toy Story in 1995, Pixar Animation Studios has become a reliable purveyor of blockbusters that have been, until now, critically lauded without exception.  This weekend's Cars 2 is the first exception, and the critical pummeling it received last week was at least a partial contributor to low projections for the automotive sequel's opening weekend box office.  Despite the critical walloping, though, Cars 2 managed to outperform some lowered expectations, pulling in an estimated $68 million since Friday.  More surprisingly, the R rated comedy Bad Teacher also exceeded expectations in second place.

In the new R rated comedy Bad Teacher, Cameron Diaz plays Elizabeth Halsey, an unapologetic misanthrope whose primary goal is not to enrich the learning experience of her unlucky students, but to earn enough money to pay for breast implants.  Breast augmentation, she reasons, is her best bet at marrying a rich husband, such as idealistic trust fund substitute teacher Scott Delacorte (Justin Timberlake), and living the rest of her life in the lap of luxury.

At a press conference for the film in Beverly Hills, Cameron Diaz and Justin Timberlake joined director Jake Kasdan and co-stars Jason Segel, Lucy Punch, and Phyllis Smith to discuss their thoughts on education, women in comedy, calf implants, ensembles, orgies, the MPAA, and Bad Teacher.

Jake Kasdan may be the son of The Big Chill and Silverado director Laurence Kasdan, but he has certainly made quite a name for himself as one of Hollywood’s top comedy directors. Kasdan has helmed popular and cutting edge comedies like Orange County, The TV Set, and Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. Kasdan now returns with his latest film, the R-rated comedy Bad Teacher starring Cameron Diaz (In Her Shoes), Justin Timberlake (The Social Network), and Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall).

The film, which opens in theaters on June 24th, features Diaz as Elizabeth Halsey, an extremely attractive, foul-mouthed, pot smoking, alcoholic schoolteacher who is looking for a rich man to marry. Elizabeth soon meets Scott Delacorte (Timberlake), a wealthy substitute teacher who she thinks might be the perfect man for her. But in order to get the man of her dreams she’ll have to compete with perfect teacher Amy Squirrell (Lucy Punch), while fending off advances from slacker gym teacher Russell (Segel). Eventually Elizabeth decides that what she needs to attract Scott is breast implants and she’ll stop at nothing, including stealing from her own students, in order to raise enough money for the operation. I recently had an opportunity to sit down and speak with director Jake Kasdan about the new film; it’s hard R rating, casting Cameron Diaz, and getting Justin Timberlake to sing badly on film. Here is what he had to say:

This week we take a look at Bad Teacher.

Actor Jason Segel first gained attention for his role on producer Judd Apatow’s short-lived TV series Freaks and Geeks, but it was their collaboration on the hit film Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which Segel also co-wrote, that made him a household name. Since then the actor turned screenwriter has appeared in several successful films including I Love You Man, Despicable Me, and the extremely popular CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother. The actor will also star in the upcoming film The Muppets, which he produced and co-wrote with his writing partner, director Nicholas Stoller (Get Him to the Greek). But first, Segel will be seen opposite actress Cameron Diaz (The Green Hornet), and singer turned actor Justin Timberlake (Yogi Bear) in director Jake Kasdan’s (The TV Set) new comedy Bad Teacher, which is scheduled for release on July 24th.

There is an extensive canon of inspirational cinematic teachers who nobly open their students minds and positively alter the course of their lives, inspiring them to stand up on their desks to quote Walt Whitman and the like.  Elizabeth Halsey, the educator played by Cameron Diaz in the comedy Bad Teacher, is in no way similar to these teachers.  Instead, she's a hard-drinking, pot-smoking, foul-mouthed misanthrope whose primary ambition is to shack up with a trust-fund substitute, brought to nerdy life by Justin Timberlake.  Four new clips serve as handy introductions for both Diaz and Timberlake, as well as supporting players Jason Segel, Phyllis Smith, and Lucy Punch.

So this week didn't see the same kind of crazy trailer action that we had last week, but there is some straight up perfection in the latest Trailer Hitch, folks.  Obviously, there's the first full length trailer for Super 8, from writer-director J.J. Abrams and producer Steven Spielberg.  Watch it and let the giddy anticipation wash over you. The high-octane, even-higher-testosterone Fast Five trailer seems to have a lot of folks excited, but my second favorite trailer this week is definitely for Aargh, for an French upcoming short film.
