Here's a rumor to take with a pickup truck-sized grain of salt: Christopher Nolan has reportedly signed on to produce Justice League, with Zack Snyder possibly directing and Christian Bale reprising the role of Bruce Wayne.

Batman is back!

Available for purchase on Blu-ray Combo Pack, DVD and Digital Download beginning December 4th is The Dark Knight Rises, the third and final chapter in director Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy. Following the success of Batman Begins and The Dark Knight, Academy Award-winner Christian Bale (The Fighter) returns once again as the Caped Crusader defending the streets of Gotham from a whole new crop of bad guys. 

In addition to the return of Bale in the dual role of Bruce Wayne/Batman, the film also welcomes back Oscar-winner Michael Caine (The Cider House Rules) as Alfred Pennyworth, Oscar-winner Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby) as Lucius Fox, and Oscar-nominee Gary Oldman (Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) as Commissioner Gordon, as well as new cast members such as Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard (La Vie en Rose) as Miranda Tate, Oscar-nominee Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married) as Selina Kyle, Tom Hardy (Warrior) as Bane, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt (Looper) as John Blake. The film also features cameos from Batman Begins actors Cillian Murphy (Red Lights) as Dr. Jonathan Crane/Scarecrow, and Oscar-nominee Liam Neeson (Schindler’s List) as Ra’s al Ghul. 

While Batman Begins was loosely based on Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One, and The Dark Knight took its inspiration from seminal Batman stories such as Batman: The Killing Joke by Alan Moore, and Batman: The Long Halloween by Jeph Loeb, The Dark Knight Rises seems to take its lead from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, as well as Batman: Knightfall by Chuck Dixon, which first featured the villain Bane.

IAR's Managing Editor Jami Philbrick recently had a chance to visit The Dark Knight Legend Exhibit at LA LIVE in Los Angeles and speak with George Barris (Creator of the Original 1966 Batmobile), Andy Smith (Builder of The Tumbler from Christopher Nolan's Trilogy), Jeff Dunham (Comedian and Owner of a Restored Michael Keaton Batmobile), and Mark Greenhalgh (Warner Bros. Corporate Archive) about the once in a lifetime event and their contributions to The Dark Knight legacy. In addition to featuring all five big screen Batmobiles, the exhibit also includes costumes and props from Christopher Nolan's Trilogy, and Batman art. 

For four years, seemingly everyone wanted to discuss The Dark Knight Rises, but director Christopher Nolan was obliged to play it coy so as to not give away any surprises regarding the conclusion of his Batman trilogy.  Now that The Dark Knight Rises is about to arrive on Blu-ray and DVD, the director is discussing his take on the Caped Crusader at length.

File this one under rumor for the time being, but it comes from a credible source, and if it turns out to be true, then holy whoa, we have a better idea of the plan for Justice League.  Also, on the off-chance that you're this interested in what Warner Bros. is doing with its superhero properties and somehow haven't seen The Dark Knight Rises, the whole notion constitutes a spoiler.

After years – years! – of breathless anticipation for the conclusion to Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy, it's possible that Batfans are suffering from withdrawals since The Dark Knight Rises arrived in theaters worldwide two months ago.  With that in mind, we've been keeping on eye on the Blu-ray and DVD release of The Dark Knight Rises, which is lucky, because Warner Bros. has revealed a release date, as well as collector's edition packaging and a partial listing of special features.

When The Dark Knight Rises is available on Blu-ray, DVD, and digital download, you have Warner Bros.' permission to watch it legally.  Right now, Christopher Nolan's conclusion to the bat-trilogy kicked off with Batman Begins is still playing in more than 1,500 theaters, but we nonetheless know just when The Dark Knight Rises will arrive in a variety of home entertainment formats.

December 3rd of this year, meaning you'll have just about three weeks of shopping time to get it for the rabid Bat-fan in your family.

It's the rumor Gotham City deserves, but not the one it needs right now.  Or something like that.  Occasionally, a rumor manages to gain traction online despite the evidence against it, and last week's word that we'd be seeing a director's cut of The Dark Knight Rises is just one such rumor.  Now, however, it has been thoroughly debunked, with word that no director's cut currently exists or is planned for the future.

Sometimes it's hard to let go, to say goodbye.  Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy is all wrapped up now, with The Dark Knight Rises closing out what was explicitly meant to be one story told over a trilogy of films.  It's tremendously unlikely that we'll see a Catwoman movie springing out of the Nolan-verse, but the lack of a dismissal from the director or Anne Hathaway is feeding the denial of those folks who can't let go of this particular Gotham.
