Very few character motivations are as propulsive and immediately involving as revenge, and none lend themselves as well to pulpy, grindhouse-style fun and mayhem.  Sushi Girl, the feature directorial debut of Kern Saxton, is a story with revenge right at its center, as a convict emerges from prison after six years for robbery; during all six years he uttered not a peep about his co-conspirators, none of whom spent a day in jail.

Upon his release, his compatriots invite this man, named Fish, to a sushi dinner with the meal served on the naked body of a beautiful woman who remains absolutely still, even as the night spirals out of control.  The official Sushi Girl trailer and a potentially brutal clip are now online, showcasing the film's eclectic, geek-friendly cast.

Henry Cavill is a very pleasant bloke with the chiseled face and presence of a star. The fact that he hasn't quite become one already surprises me, but he's going to get his day sooner or later. The man missed out on playing James Bond, Clark Kent and Batman by this much, so obviously he's got Hollywood's attention. (And not just because he was featured in "The Tudors" or was in Hellraiser: Hellword either.)

Next year will see him star in his first major Hollywood epic, Immortals, which will absolutely thrust him onto a bigger stage; but before that comes out (next November), he'll be thwarting kidnappers in The Cold Light of Day, a thriller being made by Summit Entertainment and Intrepid Pictures.

The first official trailer for Stone has been release, and we've got it embedded for you right here. The drama stars Robert De Niro, Edward Norton and Milla Jovovich, and the real surprise might be that it's Jovovich who seems to be delivering the most impressive performance. The actress, playing a convict's seductive wife, appears to more than hold her own among the two acting heavyweights. It's nice to see Milla in a movie where she's not toting a gun or kicking someone's butt - not that there's anything wrong with that - rather, she's showing off some acting chops.

The rest of the movie looks good, if not somewhat average, with De Niro and Norton assuredly playing characters that aren't necessarily out of their comfort zones. Here's the official synopsis: As parole officer Jack Mabry (De Niro) counts the days toward a quiet retirement, he is asked to review the case of Gerald “Stone” Creeson (Norton), in prison for covering up the murder of his grandparents with a fire. Now eligible for early release, Stone needs to convince Jack he has reformed, but his attempts to influence the older man’s decision have profound and unexpected effects on them both. Stone skillfully weaves together the parallel journeys of two men grappling with dark impulses, as the line between lawman and lawbreaker becomes precariously thin.

Nokas

Wednesday, 21 July 2010 13:15

Synopsis: In the morning of the 5th of April 2004, the greatest bank robbery in Norwegian history was carried out in Stavanger. Nokas is the story of this robbery, which took place at the central cash service in Stavanger. The film traces the development of the robbery from early morning on until the fatal shot that took police officer Klungland’s life. The story is credibly narrated through details in an everyday manner. Routines and daily activities at the police station and the cash service centre, the unaffected civilians at the Cathedral Square who politely ask the heavily armed robbers if they may pass with their pram, and the robbers who restlessly get dressed, take a leak, kid around, and wait for the great event. And when the robbery is carried out, it’s totally unreal for everyone. Even if it’s actually taking place.
