In District 9, the thoroughly awesome 2009 feature debut of director and co-writer Neill Blomkamp, protagonist Wikus Van De Merwe spent the majority of the film's running time doubled over in pain whilst undergoing a gruesome physical transformation before eventually ending up in some armored alien hardware for a spell. Blomkamp is currently shooting his second film, a mysterious science fiction project titled Elysium, and the first photos from the Vancouver set have made their way online. The blurry images suggest that, like Wikus, the hero of this new film, played by a bald Matt Damon, will endure plenty of physical discomfort and will also wear some sort of techno-suit thingie.

If you were wondering when director Neill Blomkamp's big budget science fiction film Elysium will hit theaters, Sony has an answer for you. The $150 million film set in the future, starring Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, and Sharlto Copley, will be released on March 8th, 2013, says THR's Heat Vision. For the time being, Elysium has that weekend all to itself, but you can expect that to change over the next two years. The film also added a cast member and revealed a few teeny, tiny details of its content.

The new teaser trailer for Gareth Edwards' low-budget wonder Monsters has just premiered at Apple.com, and it's definitely worth a look, so peep it below. Monsters, in case you're unfamiliar, was shot by newbie director Edwards for peanuts; the sci-fi movie utilized a two-man crew and a store-bought digital camera, while boasting realistic yet homemade special effects. Apparently, it cost somewhere in the neighborhood of under $10,000 to make. (And if you're thinking it's just another Paranormal Activity, check out the trailer to find out you're way off.) The flick, which has understandably drawn comparisons to District 9 (in terms of story), premiered to rave reviews at this year's South By Southwest Film Festival and has steadily gathered excited buzz ever since.
I'll say what TheOneRing.net says and warn that this report is still unconfirmed, so don't get worked up about it either way. The site, which usually has the inside word on all Middle Earth comings and goings has put up an article stating that Neill Blomkamp, director of the Peter Jackson-produced District 9, is all but certain to helm The Hobbit.
This would be a gigantic leap forward for Blomkamp, whose only film credit is District 9. However, let's not forget that he was once in line to direct a feature film version of Halo, which would have been as gigantic as they get. The guy has Jackson at his side, good will from fanboys and filmmaking skills to spare - not to mention the fact that his directorial debut received a Best Picture nomination last year; why wouldn't he be a good choice?
