So Universal is zipping along with The Bourne Legacy, a franchise continuation that will not star Matt Damon or feature the character of Jason Bourne, but will leave the door open for his possible return at some later date.  After an extensive search that at one point seemed to include every possible leading man within a twenty-year age range, the studio and writer-director Tony Gilroy settled on Jeremy Renner to play a fellow graduate of a covert CIA assassin program who gets in some trouble.  With Rachel Weisz on board to play the leading lady, it looks like Edward Norton will also join the project, making The Bourne Legacy his most commercial endeavor since The Incredible Hulk back in 2008.

A few years back, Jeremy Renner was best known as the bad guy in the forgettable summer actioner S.W.A.T., with maybe three people worldwide who recognized him as Dags from 1995's abysmal Senior Trip.  Now, he's a two-time Oscar nominee being sought for seemingly every major franchise out there, particularly the ones involving spies.  Deadline confirms that Universal has offered Renner the lead role in their Matt Damon-less The Bourne Legacy

Synopsis: A suspense-filled glimpse into the dark corridors of political power, FAIR GAME is a riveting action-thriller based on the autobiography of real-life undercover CIA operative VALERIE PLAME (Naomi Watts), whose career was destroyed and marriage strained to its limits when her covert identity was exposed by a politically motivated press leak. As a covert officer in the CIA’s Counter-Proliferation Division, Valerie leads an investigation into the existence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. Valerie’s husband, diplomat JOE WILSON (Sean Penn), is drawn into the investigation to substantiate an alleged sale of enriched uranium from Niger. But when the administration ignores his findings and uses the issue to support the call to war, Joe writes a New York Times editorial outlining his conclusions and ignites a firestorm of controversy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, A&E has reached a deal with Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Bourne Identity) to produce a pilot called "The Unexplained", which will tell first-person, real-life stories investigating supposed paranormal phenomena.
