Like Harry and Lloyd hitting their lowest point only to discover that their Samsonite contains nothing but money, the Dumb & Dumber sequel has found new financial backing after Warner Bros. put the comedy into turnaround.
For what would undoubtedly be a straightforward bit of commercially viable slapstick, the Dumb & Dumber sequel sure has endured a lot of drama behind the scenes.
After a couple years of having the sequel, tentatively titled Dumb & Dumber To, jump through hoops, Warner Bros. has opted not to proceed. But hope has not been vanquished. Directors Peter and Bobby Farrelly can now seek out alternate financing, and plenty of folks with deep pockets probably have that good old fashioned romantic feeling where they'd do anything to see Harry and Lloyd together again.
What fate could have befallen Harry Dunne and Lloyd Christmas since last we saw them trudging along an empty stretch of road at the conclusion of Dumb & Dumber most two decades ago?
Though for a little while it looked as though a Dumb & Dumber sequel officially referred to as Dumb & Dumber To might not come together, co-director Bobby Farrelly has offered assurances that the continuing adventures of these two imbeciles should begin production next year. He's also given our best idea so far on just what the story entails: finding an estranged child in order to secure a kidney transplant.
Last we heard back in April, a sequel to Dumb & Dumber was scheduled to begin production this September, with Peter Farrelly and Bobby Farrelly back in the saddle as directors, and perhaps even more importantly, Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back astride a tiny scooter as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne. While I generally don't cotton to sequels getting made decades after the originals, the opportunity to see Carrey and Daniels in their ridiculous haircuts sloughing through the depressing lives of two mouth-breathing neanderthals actually seemed sort of appealing.
It's been eighteen years since we last saw Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, two men for whom the label "half wit" would be excessively generous. The duo, last seen despondently trudging along the highway after losing everything on the Aspen adventure in Dumb & Dumber, are returning in a sequel, and according to a source in a position to say so, production on the Dumb & Dumber sequel is set to begin this September.
The last time we saw Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels as Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne, they were missing an opportunity to be the oilboys for a bevy of Hawaiian Tropic swimsuit models after the Aspen misadventure that constituted most of Dumb & Dumber. That was seventeen years ago, and the almost two decades since Dumb & Dumber have been surprisingly kind to the movie.
Directing duo Peter Farrelly and Bobby Farrelly have only ever exceeded the film commercially once, with 1998's There's Something About Mary. Now that they're finishing up on their dream physical comedy project, the siblings are looking to bring Carrey and Daniels back for the first real sequel to the eminently quotable 1994 sensation, which would hopefully include the fate of I Got Worms, Harry and Lloyd's would-be pet store.
