Here's something you don't see every day: a high-profile franchise summer sequel just a month out from release getting delayed by a whopping nine months. Yet that's exactly what is happening to G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The sequel/sorta-kinda reboot to 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was set for nationwide release on June 29th, but has been suddenly pushed back to a new release date, on March 29, 2013.
Paramount Pictures has unveiled the final domestic poster for next month's action-figure-based sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation. The one sheet has the requisite Photoshop effects, three characters holding guns, one character rocking a sword, and one faceless villain who may or may not also be holding a weapon of some sort.
A full theatrical trailer for the Hasbro sequel G.I. Retaliation has arrived online, setting up the basic story, such as it is, and throwing out a lot of quips, visual effects, action beats, and pretty much everything you'd expect from a G.I. Joe sequel trailer.
We've been seeing no small amount of images from G.I. Joe: Retaliation as of late, including three official stills just yesterday. Paramount is opening up the promotional floodgates for its sequel to 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and since the film has a big ensemble of characters bearing the names of Hasbro action figures, today there's a new crop of character posters for eight of those action-figures-turned-action-heroes/villains.
We've previously seen a bunch of images from the upcoming sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation, and they consisted pretty much exclusively of characters wielding guns and swords. There's more of that today, as eight new images from Hasbro and Paramount's sequel/sorta rebootish have arrived online, showing Roadblock, Jinx, and Snake Eyes all getting their guns and swords on. That's not all, though, there are also comparatively relaxed stills in which castmembers are not sporting lethal weapons.
A new still from this summer's sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation highlights one of the few castmembers returning from 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra: Byung-hun Lee, who plays the action figure-turned action movie bad guy Storm Shadow. Storm Shadow is the villainous nemesis of good guy ninja Snake Eyes, once again played by Ray Park, another returned G.I. Joe thespian.
Yesterday, a still from the upcoming sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation showed returning G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra character Snake Eyes casually pointing a handgun. At the time, I bemoaned that the picture didn't showcase Dwayne Johnson's ridiculous musculature or Adrianne Palicki's general greatness. Well today, two of three new images from G.I. Joe: Retaliation contain both of those things. Huzzah.
The Super Bowl TV spot for the sequel/sorta reboot G.I. Joe: Retaliation has erstwhile The Rock Dwayne Johnson quoting no less a source of earthly wisdom than Jay-Z. A new trailer has Johnson as Roadblock once again laying down the rhetorical law, this time explaining to cohort, "Here's how it works: G.I. Joes, we're a fist. How do we strike? Together."
If yesterday was the day of the commercials for commercials – with both John Carter and The Avengers dropping tiny ten-second teases of their respective Super Bowl commercials – then today is the day of straight-up Super Bowl commercials. Earlier, The Dictator debuted its full Super Bowl spot, and now Paramount has taken the liberty of unveiling its thirty-second commercial for G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the sequel to 2009's G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra that will attempt to cleanse the taste of that movie from the audience's collective palette.
As he proved in a sweaty, shaved-headed, clinched-jawed turn in Fast Five earlier this summer, Dwayne Johnson is a veritable locomotive of testosterone. The dude's arms are so big that he can't functionally stand with his arms straight at his sides. Probably the only way to make the estrwhile professional wrestler and Scorpion King look more conclusively masculine is to put him in a military outfit with a really, really big gun. That's how you'll find him in this, the first image of Johnson in costume as Roadblock in G.I. Joe 2: Retaliation. Fertile women be warned: simply looking at this picture could very well get you pregnant. Such is his virility.
