It's been five years since Paul Thomas Anderson's last film, the magnificent There Will Be Blood, so forgive me if The Master incites perhaps too much anticipation.  It's the latest movie from the writer-director of Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, and Hard Eight (aka Sydney) though, so yeah, excitement is entirely justified.  As to prove it, the first official footage from The Master has debuted online, and damn if it isn't every shade of promising.

"If there's one thing the history of evolution has taught us," said fictitious chaotician Ian Malcolm just about two decades years ago, "It's that life will not be contained. Life breaks free, expands to new territories, and crashes through barriers, painfully, maybe even dangerously, but, ah, well, there it is."  So it is with Jurassic Park, the film in which Malcolm was played by Jeff Goldblum.  Twenty years after it became a massive blockbuster in the summer of 1993, Jurassic Park is set for 3D theatrical re-release in July 2013.

Ninety-nine percent of all velociraptor phobias can be traced directly to Jurassic Park, the 1993 Steven Spielberg blockbuster that proved to be a landmark in the development of believable CG-character animation and a cultural sensation.  The film was the first to be released in surround sound, and now, it's on the way to Blu-ray with a 7.1 surround mix to properly capture the gut-churning thump of a T-Rex's feet, as well as the clicking of that horrific raptor claw.  Along with sequels The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III, Michael Crichton's doomed amusement park will be available in high definition on October 25th, with a bevy of special features including an extensive behind-the-scenes documentary.

Production on writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson's next film – his first since 2007's masterful There Will Be Blood – is set begin on June 13th, after a long gestation.  Indie producer/exalted savior of cool projects Megan Ellison is financing the as-yet untitled drama through her Annapurna Films, with the Weinstein Company distributing.  Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix are headlining the cast of the film formerly known as The Master, and now none other than three-time Oscar nominee and newly minted Lois Lane Amy Adams has joined the film, as well.

Through their tenure at Miramax right up to The King's Speech, the Weinstein brothers have proven to exceedingly good at winning Oscars.  With incomparable films like Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch Drunk Love, and There Will Be Blood, Paul Thomas Anderson has proven to be exceptionally good at making movies.  Perhaps these two skill sets will prove mutually beneficial, as the Weinstein Company has acquired Anderson's untitled next film for distribution, and it's set begin filming this summer with Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix confirmed in the lead roles.

Will Ferrell is known for his oblivious, over the top comedic creations, such as Anchorman's Ron Burgundy, but he has infrequently tried his hand at more nuanced dramatic characters, most notably in 2006's Stranger Than Fiction.  While most summer movies starring Ferrell involve unbridled absurdity and at least once instance of him screaming at the top of his lungs, Everything Must Go looks to be more along the lines of Stranger Than Fiction, but not without a wry sense of humor.  A poster and an excellent trailer debuted at Apple (via Collider) today, and you should check it out, even if you're typically turned off by the presence of Will Ferrell.

Rogue of the Week: Nicolas Cage

Wednesday, 05 January 2011 15:10

The first time Nicolas Cage caught my attention was in the classic 80s flick Valley Girl, and he was totally awesome. This funny, sweet look at a strange romance between a punk rocker (Cage) and a valley girl (Deborah Foreman) is a cult classic for good reason. The script is great, and the chemistry between Cage and his leading lady, Foreman (April Fool’s Day, Waxwork), is impressive. Valley Girl really encouraged people to take notice of what this guy could do.

Dustin Hoffman will reunite with Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro on Little Fockers after all, reports Deadline.com. While the original cut of the film, due out this December, didn't include Hoffman, Universal saw fit to film at least four new scenes featuring the Oscar-winning actor, as well as his on-screen Focker wife, Barbara Streisand.

Ready to meet the 'Little Fockers'?

Friday, 25 June 2010 08:14

Sometimes a movie franchise is able to keep forging ahead just based on the charisma and chemistry between its main stars; the Meet the Parents films are certainly in that category. The dynamic between Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro is just too enjoyable to ignore, and let's face it: no matter how many times they make nice, there's always going to be some tension between in-laws and the one who took their baby away. (Besides, Ben Stiller is just easy to pick on.)

So it is that Little Fockers is on its way this December, with Stiller, De Niro, Teri Polo, Owen Wilson, Blythe Danner and Barbara Streisand all returning and being joined by newbies Jessica Alba, Laura Dern, Harvey Keitel (!!) and, of course, the "little Fockers".

It has taken 10 years, two little Fockers with wife Pam (Teri Polo) and countless hurdles for Greg (Ben Stiller) to finally get “in” with his tightly wound father-in-law, Jack (Robert De Niro). When Greg and Pam’s entire clan — including Pam’s lovelorn ex, Kevin (Owen Wilson) — descends for the twins’ birthday party, Greg must prove to the skeptical Jack that he’s fully capable as the man of the house.
