Okay, months worth of accolades and awards speculation are over.  What better way to cleanse your palette than with the Golden Rasberries, the annual joke awards honoring the very worst in theatrical features.  The list of Razzie nominees from the year that was in 2011 is now online, and it contains a surprise or two.

Valentine's Day and New Year's Eve.  For two consecutive years, director Garry Marshall and screenwriter Katherine Fugate served up holiday-themed ensembles unreasonably packed with bankable movie stars and romantic comedy cliches.  Had New Year's Eve been a bigger hit, you can only imagine that we have spent the next several years besieged by these novelty offerings until the holidays were finally exhausted.  That could still happen, actually.  But even if it does, we'll always have MLK Day, a parody trailer for a fictitious romantic comedy that expertly eviscerates the cloying, manipulative style of those films.

A phenomenon swept the nation over this past weekend, and it involved audiences uniformly and venomously booing The Devil Inside as soon as the credits rolled on the found footage horror movie.  The film's mediocrity has now been well documented by audiences on Twitter, accompanied by almost unanimously terrible critical reviews and a rare "F" score collected by market research firm CinemaScore.  Being pretty much objectively a really, really crappy movie didn't stop The Devil Inside from making a fairly ridiculous amount of money in its debut weekend and easily topping the domestic box office.

2011 is in the bag and the bag is in the river, folks.  It was a year that saw ticket prices continuing to increase and attendance continuing to decline at multiplexes all over this nation of ours.  Overall, the year that was saw a decline of roughly 3% from the cumulative box office of 2010, the year in which Avatar rolled around in a money pile.  The last weekend of 2011 saw no new major releases, leaving the heavy hitters from last week's holiday onslaught to stay strong over New Year's weekend.  Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol once again stood atop box office mountain, with fellow sequels Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows and Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked rounding out the top three.  Additionally, War Horse built momentum and New Year's Eve got a bump for obvious reasons.

Over the next few weeks, we'll treated to an onslaught of big event movies in time for Christmas, while the prestige pictures currently in limited release will expand and be joined by more.  It'll be a veritable moviegoing cornucopia, with all manner of variety to suit anyone's holiday tastes.  For now, though, the number one movie in America is New Year's Eve, a film that is basically the cinematic equivalent of KFC's Famous Bowl: a calculated yet sloppy mash of starch and heart disease.*  The mega-ensemble debuted in first place, followed by The Sitter, and, in third place, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1, which sat atop the box office heap for three consecutive weeks.

It's Friday, ladies and gentlemen, and three separate studios have unveiled three very different posters for three wildly different upcoming films.  First, Fox has provided the first teaser poster for the Farrelly Brothers' new take on The Three Stooges, featuring the silhouettes of Sean Hayes, Will Sasso, and Chris Diamantopoulos as Larry, Curly, and Moe, respectively. 

Second, FilmDistrict and GK Films have released another new poster for The Rum Diary, the Johnny Depp-starring adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson's first novel.  Like the last poster for that film, this one includes Depp and a trashed hotel room, but this time you can see his face. 

Finally, Warner Bros has unleashed the one-sheet for New Years Eve, director Garry Marshall's follow-up to Valentine's Day.  Like its predecessor, this film is being marketed on it's ridiculously huge and recognizable ensemble cast, with the titular holiday telling you everything else you need to know.

Of the almost seven billion human inhabitants of planet Earth, approximately four billion will appear in the romantic comedy New Year's Eve.  With this new ensemble tale, director Garry Marshall and writer Katherine Fugate apply the same formula of star-studded volume and idealized holiday shenanigans that worked for them in last year's Valentine's Day.  In fact, based on this first trailer, you might expect that New Year's Eve is a sequel to Valentine's Day, particularly given the presence of Ashton Kutcher and Jessica Biel, but the new film simply a spiritual sequel, with both actors playing wholly different characters.  Plus, while that film took place in Los Angeles, New Year's Eve is set in New York.  So it's totally different.

Yesterday, we heard that Elzabeth Hurley had been cast in NBC's Wonder Woman pilot, scoring the role of an evil scientist nemesis to Adrianne Palicki's superpowered Amazonian.  The casting round-up continues today, with Deadline breaking the news that Cary Elwes, best known as Westley in The Princess Bride, has joined the cast as a corporate ally of Diana Themyscira aka Wonder Woman.  Not only that, but the Deadline article also mentions that is also part of the mega-ensemble in Garry Marshall's currently filming Valentine's Day spin-off New Year's Eve.

Every time you think you've seen the last casting news on New Year's Eve, director Garry Marshall's pseudo-sequel to last year's Valentine's Day, a new update will appear as if to chide you for your presumption.  The ensemble romantic comedy, which tells a whole bunch of vaguely interconnected stories on the boozy holiday, has been shooting in New York for a few weeks now, but that doesn't mean Marshall can't add a new name to his epic romcom.  Actually, in this case, the name isn't so new; Halle Berry had been attached to the film, but had to back out, fearing a prolonged custody battle in Los Angeles.  Well, the custody case is settled, and Berry's back on board, though as a different character.

Yes, that's right, ladies and gentlemen, the former fearsome NWA rapper and the actor who scared the hell out of middle America as Doughboy in Boyz 'N The Hood is in negotiations to play opposite Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum in the feature version of late-eighties television show 21 Jump Street.  Deadline has the news that Ice Cube will glower in the role of a police precinct captain originally played by Steven Williams on the series.  Presumably, this will give Cube ample opportunity to both scowl at and screamingly berate Hill and Tatum.  For more details on 21 Jump Street and other Cube-related projects, just read on.
