The superhero as we know it may be a uniquely American repackaging of resonant archetypes, but that doesn't mean that they're the exclusive province of these United States.  Spandex-styled avengers strike a chord in people across a whole lot of cultures, and in the decades since Superman first smashed the hell out of a car on his first Action Comics cover, superheroes have popped up on pretty much every continent.  The new film Griff the Invisible offers a look at a home-grown Australian hero.  Ryan Kwanten stars as Griff, an introverted office drone by day and protector of his Sydney neighborhood by night.  A new clip from Griff the Invisible eschews costumed adventuring but provides a good idea of the movie's buoyant tone, which mixes drama, comedy, and romance.

Sensitive American boy meets adorable British bird at college in Los Angeles.  Boy, played by Anton Yelchin, and girl, played by Felicity Jones, promptly fall in the kind of desperate, life-defining love that is almost guaranteed to end horribly.  When the girl overstays her Visa and is given the incontrovertible boat from These United States, neither lover can let go.  That's Like Crazy, which premiered to much acclaim at Sundance this year and has a wide theatrical release on the way.  The first trailer dropped today, and while the audio on all the dialogue could use a little cleaning up, the melancholic cover of Elvis Presley's "Fools Rush In" will leave little doubt that you should be feeling pretty sad.

Blue Valentine is a powerful motion picture. It tells the story of a man and woman who were once in love but are now falling out of love. Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling play Cindy and Dean (in Oscar worthy performances), a married couple with a daughter named Frankie (Faith Wladyka). Mom is the serious one who works at a hospital with the hopes of becoming a doctor. Dad is the fun one, a man of many talents, who has a tough time committing to anything (except his wife and daughter). Cindy and Dean could be your neighbors or friends, or even you or me. This sense of familiarity makes the film feel fresh and honest; it may even break your heart.

Or maybe just chat about friends with benefits…? That is exactly what the new trailer for No Strings Attached is talking about. The new film from Ivan Reitman (Ghostbusters and Meatballs) is a romantic comedy about relationships, love and the previously mentioned three-letter word.

The film stars Ashton Kutcher, Greta Gerwig, Mindy Kaling, Olivia Thirlby, Kevin Kline, Cary Elwes, Lake Bell, Chris ‘Ludacris’ Bridges, Jake Johnson and the ever so lovely, Natalie Portman.
