If Marvel Studios were a person, and you ran into that person on the street today, you'd probably be like, "Oh hey, Marvel. Haven't seen you too much since Captain America: The First Avenger. Nice work on that Avengers trailer though. So what's up with you these days?" The gender-nonspecific person named Marvel would reply, "Ugh, Thor 2 is busting my entirely-figurative balls all the time, but you know I can't really say much," because he/she generally plays some stuff pretty close to the vest. In an awkward pause during the ensuing conversation, though, Marvel would casually mention changing the release date of a mysterious project, then jump right to The Avengers being a 3D release, which you've long suspected to be the case.
More than a year ago, Marvel Studios had pegged production on Runaways to take place from March to July of this year, and everything seemed to be in place for the adaptation of Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphono's excellent Marvel comic series to get going by then. But here we are in August of 2011 and the Runaways shoot did not, in fact, conclude last month, as you can tell by the fact that you've read about it approximately nowhere over the last several months. So what gives? According to screenwriter Drew Pearce, the film is indeed ready to go, but Marvel Studios was forced to postpone production because The Avengers is simply their number one priority at the moment.
Actor turned writer Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder) was the screenwriter responsible for last summer's hugely successful Iron Man 2, which went on to gross over $600 million worldwide. Yet despite the film's financial success he will not be penning the upcoming Iron Man 3. Director Jon Favreau, who helmed both Iron Man and Iron Man 2, announced in December that he would not be returning to direct the third chapter of the series but would continue to executive produce The Avengers. Recently it was revealed that Lethal Weapon writer Shane Black would be taking over directing duties on the upcoming film and Drew Pearce, who also penned the proposed Marvel Studio's film Runaways, would be writing the script. So now that Theroux is no longer working with Marvel, what exactly is his relationship like with the comic book based movie studio?
When Marvel Studios chose celebrated '90s action screenwriter Shane Black to direct Iron Man 3, it seemed only natural that he'd probably write the film as well. Three weeks ago, Black seemed to confirm that he would write the second sequel, with star Robert Downey Jr. contributing substantially to the story. Now, though, Marvel has hired Drew Pearce to handle screenwriting duties on the metal-suited sequel.
Marvel Studios is moving forward with a film adaptation of their comic series Runaways, with production set to commence in March of next year, according to a tweet from Production Weekly. Shooting will take place in L.A., with Paul Sollet (Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist) at the helm.
