Sony Pictures has made no bones about its intention to adapt the entirety of the late Stieg Larsson's bestselling Millennium Trilogy, starting with The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.  That film is performing reasonably well in theaters right now, and the studio is continuing development on the first sequel, The Girl Who Played With Fire, though it's unknown whether or not director David Fincher will return.  Given the obvious franchise intentions, it's no surprise that the opening title sequence for the first film visually incorporates moments from all three novels.

That title sequence strongly recalls some of Fincher's distinctive work as a director of both commercials and music videos, as well as (to a lesser extent) the titles to his 1995 thriller Se7en.  The titles feature a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" by composers Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, along with Yeah Yeah Yeahs lead singer Karen O, and its a testament hypnotic, at times assaultive style that the song doesn't simply overwhelm the visual presentation.

Between Panic Room and Zodiac, director David Fincher didn't release a movie for five years, and when you're talking about a perfectionist auteur on Fincher's level, that's a long time to lay low.  He's been prolific as of late, though, and his next feature, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, hits theaters in just about a month.  But what will he do next?  In all likelihood, it'll be one of two projects, and the one that he's been attached to for awhile is Disney's new 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.  While there's no absolute guarantee that Fincher's next will be a high seas adventure, Disney has just hired Andrew Kevin Walker, who has a history with Fincher, to rewrite the screenplay.

Rogue of the Week: David Fincher

Wednesday, 29 September 2010 13:09

David Fincher made Fight Club.

Honestly, for Rogue of the Week that would nearly be enough for us.

Fight Club (based on the fantastic novel by Chuck Palahniuk) divided audiences upon its initial release, but it has also found itself new respect thanks to a fantastic DVD and a recent Blu-ray release. This Brad Pitt/Edward Norton/Helena Bonham Carter combo is one of the most fascinating films of the past few decades.
