Rogue of the Week: Saoirse Ronan

Thursday, 14 April 2011 14:45

Many grown up actors with years of experience cannot carry the dramatic weight of an entire film, let alone one in which they're also required to convincingly be a full-on action hero, doing all manner of kung fu and stunts aplenty.  Yet 17 year-old actress Saoirse Ronan somehow accomplished all of the above as the title character in Hanna, which came in at number 2 in the weekend's box office, besting Arthur, a heavily marketed comedy starring far more recognizable stars.

Being a huge fan and all, I once tried to shake Steven Seagal's hand.  In response, he broke every bone from my phalanges to scapula.  I didn't hold it against him though, just I don't blame a tiger for eating the occasional zoo-goer; it's just in Seagal's nature.  Okay, I've never come into contact with Steven Seagal, but when a pre-fame Ponytailed One was training Sean Connery for fight scenes in Never Say Never Again, he did break Connery's wrist.  To celebrate Seagal's mastery of compound fractures, Oliver Noble over at Film Drunk created a video compilation of every cinematic bone breaking performed by Seagal, and in doing so, completed a work of art to rival the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel.  Watch the video and imagine Steven Seagal breaking both of  Michelangelo's puny, Renaissance artist legs.

The Expendables hasn't even come out yet, but its director-star is already planning a sequel. That's the news coming from the L.A. Times, which spoke with Sylvester Stallone about his highly anticipated action extravaganza, opening this weekend, about the possibility of The Expendables 2.

'Machete' trailer slashes its way online

Thursday, 08 July 2010 12:31

Robert Rodriguez and Danny Trejo go together like PB and J; the two have been collaborating since Rodriguez's 1995 action flick Desperado and you just know it's been building toward Machete this whole time. (Trejo's Desperado character even carries around a slew of sharp killing implements.) While the two have Predators on the immediate horizon, they've been busy working on this, a feature-length version of the Grindhouse trailer that kicked so much butt a few years ago.

As for the film's trailer, it's... okay. I'm not jumping out of my seat and salsa dancing. Still, the concept and cast are enough to put a smile on my face and eagerly await the film's debut, which comes on September 3rd.
